10 Creepiest Things That Happened To Baby Sitters Who Were Left Alone With Kids
I was in grade school and was told to watch my brother a year younger than me. My doorbell rang once and I didn’t answer because I was taught not to answer the door when young and home alone. So I just ignore the ring.
Then the doorbell is pressed another five times so I assume it’s my family or a friend. I go into my dining room and peer through the window. A man in a trench coat with a hat is walking away from my home and starts pacing in my driveway.
I freak out and check that my back door is locked and get my brother to do the garage and the front door. The man comes back as my brother is sitting UNDERNEATH the door as the man is now not only knocking and ringing the doorbell but also trying to turn the door knob.
After a few minutes he goes onto the road and reverses… In his KIDNAPPER car down my street. Still wondering what would’ve happened if he turned the knob his first visit to my door.
Okay so I was babysitting a two-month-old (my niece ) & a five-year-old (my other niece) at my house. The five-year-old was sleeping in my mom’s room right across from the baby’s room. I was laying in bed in the baby’s room & it’s like midnight. All of a sudden my 5 five year old niece starts screaming from across the hall. I jump out of bed & find her sitting up right in bed with her eyes closed as if she’s still sleeping & she’s pointing in the corner saying the witch is here! the witch is here! I lay her back down & she lays down as if nothing had happened. When I walk back into the baby’s room, she’s sitting up & playing patty cake & looking up at the corner in the ceiling. How does a 2 month old baby know how to play patty cake? I have no flipping idea. Freaked me out.
Babysitting my younger brother one night at our house. I was 16. He was 11. Parents were out for a night with some friends and supposed to be home around 2 or so. About midnight I looked out of my bedroom window and saw someone standing out by our garage. I thought it was brother for some reason. Went to go down the stairs to go outside. Brother came out of his room when he heard me walking down the stairs. Needless to say, I was a little more than a little bit freaked out. Called parents and they came home. Found nobody, of course.
I posted this months ago in another thread, but I shall share it again. When I was in high school I was babysitting for two neighborhood kids. The little girl, Emily, never wanted to go to sleep, she would come up with any excuse to not have to go to bed every weekend she tried to stay up later. So when she got up and told me she was scared to go to bed that she kept hearing voices. I wrote it off as her trying to get out of going to bed. I had put her and her brother (Justin) to bed an hour ago and the boy was already asleep. I humored her though and went into her room and listened. I didn’t hear a thing; I checked out her window everything and heard/saw nothing. So I compromised with her and laid in bed with her until she fell asleep. After she fell asleep I went in the hall and I heard voices.
I felt all the blood rush out of me and all I could think about was Emily coming into the living room an hour ago crying that she was scared that she had heard voices begging me to believe her. And the voices were coming from in the house, more specifically down the hall where Justin was. I went over to the room and knocked. I don’t know why I knocked, but I think I was just so scared I didn’t know what to do. The voices stopped instantly and I heard Justin it sounded like he was crying (he was around nine years old and his parents were taking a weekend trip away). I opened the door and he was laying face down on the bed crying. I was sort of relived I figured he was just upset his parents were going to be gone so long and I had made up the whispering in my head. So I went over to the bed and tried to ask Justin what was wrong. And he said “They’re here”.
The next thing I know I hear the closet door being banged opened and I heard screams. I just threw myself on Justin, I didn’t even bother with turning and seeing what was going on. I thought someone was in the house and they were going to kill us and I covered his body with mine. I was so scared I didn’t know what to do, I had already started to cry and begging things like “please take anything”, “don’t touch the kids” “please please I will do anything just don’t hurt us”. Then I realized that everyone was just laughing including Justin and I turned to see two of my friends in the room, they had thought it would be funny to play a joke on me. And we all lived in the same neighborhood so they got Justin in on it. They were just laughing and repeating everything I was saying mockingly I went from being terrified out of my mind to more enraged than I have ever been in my life. We eventually made up and then it was just this funny thing to tell people about.
While in my last year at uni I was trying to earn a little extra money and decided to post ads online for babysitting and dog-walking services in my local area. Most people with ads on there had put a picture of themselves and so did I (logic being that parents would want to check out potential babysitters by appearance too) and most people put contact numbers on there too, so I also did that, thinking it might give potential customers more points of contact than just messaging through the ad site.
So, within about 45 minutes of posting this ad, I am downstairs cooking dinner, I hear my phone ringing in my bedroom but am tied up with hot pans on the stove etc. so I left it, annoyed that I had missed a potential customer.
However, I hear my phone ringing again, and again, and AGAIN. I dash up as soon as I can free myself from cooking and go and pick up the phone. When I pick up all I can hear is heavy breathing, so naturally after I don’t get a reply I hang up. The phone rings again as soon as I put it down. I pick up again and eventually a guy replies.
The guy starts off normal and I figured that perhaps it had just been a bad line before. He first explains that he has two kids under five and then asks me If I think I can handle them. Having experience with (some pretty shittily behaved) kids in the past I say yes. He then asks me if I stay overnight when babysitting (this pulled up a red flag in my mind) and I firmly say no.
After this, he then goes silent again and all I hear is some heavy breathing, I ask if he is still there and then suddenly he says “are you a virgin?” and I hung up. The phone keeps ringing and ringing and ringing for another hour non stop. He had withheld his number so I couldn’t specifically block that number but then I found the function to block withheld numbers on my phone, did it, deleted my number from the ad site and then proceeded to message every other person on there in my local area with a babysitting ad to warn them, turns out some of them had had similar experiences.
I would never have fallen for the “do you stay overnight?” part, but it made me shudder to think of teenagers or vulnerable adults falling for it and what could have happened to them. If he hadn’t withheld his number I would have reported him in an instant. I felt so unsafe and was jumping at shadows for the rest of that evening.
My friend had to babysit his Mom’s friend’s two kids, a boy about 10 and a girl about 8, and he was able to have me hang out as well. The boy was aloud to play outside as long as he stayed near the house, but the girl had to stay inside.
The first thing that was weird was the girl never said a word. She sat on the couch and just sat there staring at us with huge eyes. Just…staring. We tried talking to her, but nothing.
We went outside to check on the boy, and caught him nailing a live snake to a board. We just backed away, went inside, and watched TV until we could go.
Started with hearing crying like noises coming from outside, actually kind of sounded like a baby crying but the one I was babysitting was sound asleep. Went outside to investigate but didn’t see anything but when I closed the door there was blood on the floor behind me leading all the way through the kitchen and up the stairs. I didn’t want to act scared or anything in front of one of the other little kids I was babysitting so I just tried to act cool, kept saying “it’s alright probably nothing” while in my head I was screaming “What the fuck, what the fuck, what the fuck”.
Went upstairs anyway by myself to investigate and the blood stopped and was smeared on the bathroom door, prooperly shitting myself at this stage. Opened it up and saw a cat bleeding from its face hiding in the bath tub. Turned out it just got in a fight with another cat and must have ran in when I opened to door to check outside, the noises were just those weird noises cats make when confronting each other. Parents also didn’t mention they had a cat so that didn’t help.
Only thing that confused me though was the blood on the bathroom door was pretty high up, not really sure how the cat could have got it up there. Needles to say though opening up that door was one of the most tense moments of my life, felt like I was in a horror movie.
Not scary in a horror movie type way, but nearly gave me a heart attack. As a young teen I didn’t realize that some babies sleep with their eyes open. Go in to check on the baby after an hour or so and I had a heart stopping few seconds when I thought he was dead.
My sister was babysitting once and a guy just came to the door and knocked for a while. She called my mom and my mom called the police department to send a squad car by. The guy left when the cop came and he came back and knocked again and tried to open the door. The cop drove by one more time and he didn’t come back.
When I was in high school, I spent about a week babysitting two kids in their house while their parents were away on business. Although I lived in a fairly rural area, the family lived within ten minutes of my house and I knew the neighborhood pretty well as I had babysat for the family before.
It was late October, Halloween weekend, and as a typical 17 year old I was disappointed I was not out with my friends and instead stuck inside babysitting. It was just about bedtime for the kids, so it was pitch black outside and silent (again, very rural area. This makes this encounter that much creepier). The house I was sitting had a large backyard and a sort of garage that had been converted to an apartment. A young man lived in the apartment, but the family was insistent that he never comes to the house and would not bother me.
As I am putting the kids to bed, the doorbell rings. Since I knew my family and friends were out for Halloween, I opened the front door without thinking. It was my best friend, who also lived nearby so she knew the house I was staying at. She had a couple of our guy friends with her. She explained that they were on their way to the corn mazes and wanted to stop by. Grateful to see them before they went, we hung out in the kitchen for probably around twenty minutes before they went on their way. By that time, the kids were asleep upstairs so I went around the house and locked all of the doors and closed all of the blinds. It was a pretty modern style home, so an entire side of the house was just straight windows.
After I get the house ready, I settle down in the living room to watch TV. Probably around thirty minutes or so pass, when I hear a knock at the front door. It was faint, so I turned off the TV to hear it better. Hearing the knock again, I could feel the hairs on my arm stand up. It was pretty late and I had no idea who would be coming to the house at this hour.
Suddenly, the faint knock turns into a violent, loud banging. Running on adrenaline, I sprint upstairs into the master bedroom. I didn’t have a cell phone at the time, and knowing there was a phone in the room I figured it would be safer to be near a phone and the kids. Now not only is the door being pounded on but the doorbell is being rung over and over again, insistently. I pound my house number into the phone, and my mom picks up. I panickedly told her what was going on downstairs. She gives the phone to my dad, and he says he will be right there. Relieved, I clutch the phone in my hand and go out to the landing to check on the kids.
The oldest was standing outside her door, confused and afraid. I quickly told her it was just my dad coming to check on us and to go back in her room and go back to bed. After she goes back in her room, I rush downstairs to make sure the doors are still locked. Running past the wall of windows to get to the door, suddenly all of the windows start shaking violently. I’m absolutely terrified at this point, so I run to the TV room and look for something I could use as a weapon.
Suddenly, the ringing and pounding just stops. I sit there, stunned, in absolute silence. Then, a single doorbell ring shatters the silence and makes me practically jump out of my skin. Feeling a rush of relief upon realizing it was my dad, I rush to open the door. There was nobody there. I slam the door shut and run to grab the phone. I call my house again. “Mom,” I whisper, “Is dad here?” She tells me he can’t find the car keys and hasn’t even left yet. I felt the blood run out of my face.
I’m crying hysterically at this point, so my mom stays on the phone with me and tells me when my dad finally leaves. I see a pair of headlights come tearing through the dark. The sheer speed of the car told me it was my dad. I throw open the front door and run out.
Suddenly, from around the corner three shadows come out. My dad, wielding a baseball bat at this point, runs towards the shadowy figures, screaming and waving his arms. The closer they get, I realize it was my friends. Instead of going to the corn maze, they decided it would be fun to scare me on Halloween.
I felt a rush of relief and anger. My dad bitched them out and although I did not get a lot of sleep that night, I was happy to know it was just my friends.
I know this story has a kind of lame ending, but it was honestly the scariest moment of my life.
