11 Things Anxiety Makes You Do

11 Things Anxiety Makes You Do

Suffering from emotional and mood disorders in and of itself is a very isolating experience. Despite the fact that billions of people around the world suffer in one way or another, social stigmas remain ever present and leave many of us to suffer silently, worried about being shamed or humiliated just because the problem still exists.

Anxiety is one of those disorders that to this day so many people don't understand. It can manifest differently for every person but a lot of us experience a few things very similarly and our friends and family have no clue that a lot of our decisions and behaviors are directed forcefully by our crippling anxiety.

Namely, if you have anxiety, you will almost surely relate to all 11 behaviors on this list. Just know that you are not as alone as you feel.

1. Every Conversation is on Repeat

Every conversation is not an exaggeration. Short or lengthy, every conversation from the moment you stop and for sometimes weeks afterwards replays in your mind. Every twist and turn, every look they gave you when you spoke, how your cheeks burned every time you opened your mouth, every letter you fumbled over... it never really stops until another one takes its place.

2. This Isn't Helpful

When someone expresses concern for you or your well-being or how you're doing, instead of feeling comforted by their concerns and love for you, you find yourself spiraling in chaos. After all, if they're worried about you why shouldn't YOU be worried about you?

3. Obsess, Obsess, Obsess

You obsess over everything, literally everything, and especially over things most people wouldn't give so much as a second passing thought to. Small scenarios, conversations, and even the way someone looked at you weeks ago haunt your thoughts. These random moments that usually mean nothing keep you up late at night trying to understand what they meant and you place meaning to them. "Surely it was a bad thing," you think to yourself.

4. Tired? Doesn't Matter. You're Up Early.

What is sleep? It's foreign to you. Just as your about to drift off at night you remember that one thing you said a month ago and you need to replay the conversation over and over again and figure out how differently you could have handled it. That's what happens in the morning too, you're exhausted but you gain just enough consciousness for one of the random thoughts that keeps you up at night to stumble into your mind and just like that you are not drifting back off to sleep. Your day has begun.

5. Future Chaos

Any time someone mentions the future it triggers your anxiety. You may even feel like you're having a full-on mental breakdown on a regular basis, maybe even every few days, just because the future comes up casually in conversation.

6. Mistakes are permanent

Every fumble and mistake you've ever made is on permanent replay. You beat yourself up and you never forgive yourself.

7. Declining an Invitation, No Matter How Badly You Want To Go

It doesn't matter how exciting or thrilling an event seems. Whether it's a concert for one of your favorite bands or a small birthday celebration at a restaurant with your friends, anxiety can be debilitating. To the point that even something you want to do is just too much to do.

8. You Blame Yourself

Engaging in conversation can be hard enough but when someone doesn't reply to you, you instantly blame yourself. "What did I do wrong? Do I need to say something else? Should I apologize?" Questions whirl through your mind at light speed as you try to understand what you did to warrant being ignored, whether it's from your lover, your mother, your friend, or just an acquaintance it doesn't matter. You worry you've failed them all.

9. The Exhaustion

It's not always daily but some days you are so exhausted both mentally and physically that you cannot bring yourself out of bed. Maybe it was the days on end of lack of sleep or maybe that just contributed to it, but your constantly whirring mind and your tired body just call it quits and you can't keep up. It's physical, it's emotional, it's all encompassing.

10. Cripling Fear

You constantly fear the worst in every situation possible. Optimism is a foreign concept. But it's not just outcomes you fear, it's possibilities. You probably don't enter a vehicle without fearing a car accident. It looms in your mind like a storm on the brink of cracking. It is not something you can escape.

11. Comparisons Will End You

Comparing ourselves to others may sound like a pretty standard practice but you do this constantly. In every single thing you do and say you compare it to how someone else would have handled it and it doesn't stop there. You see someone else and their success and you compare yours or your lack of. Something as simple as a photo on social media can set you off.

Before you go, if all of this sounds spot on to your life, just remember that you're not alone. Reach out, find someone to talk to. A professional, a friend, a family member... your value is so much more than you realize and you don't deserve to suffer in silence. Millions of people also suffer from anxiety, never give up.
