14 of the World's Creepiest Places Ever

If you're a fanatic of all things horror and terrifying this list may end up being a bucket list of places to visit to get your thrills and chills. Otherwise, this is a list of places to avoid at all costs or you might just pee yourself from the fear. The world has no shortages of creepy places, rumored to be haunted or occupied by the worst of the worst but we went ahead and narrowed down the top 14 you definitely need to know about. These photos alone are creepy but the stories that go with these unique places are enough alone to give you nightmares tonight!


1. Island of the Dolls

Located in Mexico, rumor has it that this creepy island came to be when a caretaker discovered a drowned girl and her doll floating in the water. To respect her, he hung the doll in the trees and for the next 50 years he continued to hang dolls in her honor before he himself actually drowned in the very same waters he found her. Today, people continue to hang dolls as a part of a super creepy tradition.


2. The West Virginia State Penitentiary

The building was retired in 1995 but it turns out you can still take night time tours there. Thanks to over 100 executions taking place in this creepy building, it's rumored to be haunted by the worst of the worst.


3. Leap's Castle

Said to be one of the world's most haunted castles, this creepy place in Ireland is known for it's long list of gruesome deaths and the "bloody chapel," where a priest murdered his very own brother during mass.

4. Chapel of Bones

This chapel in Prague contains the bones of 5,000 monks and 2 bodies hanging from the walls. The creepiest part? One of the hanging bodies is of a child!


5. Abandoned Phsyciatric Hospital

Located in Parma, Italy this creepy hospital is even creepier thanks to artist, Herbert Baglione, who added creepy shadow paintings to the walls. Yikes!


6. Beelitz-Heilst├Ątten Red Army Military Hospital

This creepy complex located in Germany had over 60 buildings, most of which are now abandoned. Back during World War 1 Hitler was a patient here.


7. Poveglia

More commonly known as Plague Island near Venice, Italy this extremely creepy small island was used as a quarantine for possibly 160,000 people with the plague from 1793 to 1814 and there are actual mass graves of plague victims. If that wasn't enough to make the island creepy, from 1922 to 1968 there was also a mental hospital here where a doctor may have tortured patients instead of helping them before KILLING them.


8. Sagada, Phillipines

"The Hanging Coffins of Sagada" is definitely creepy! Members of the Igorot tribe have spent decades burying their dead by hanging their coffins off the cliffs because they believe it keeps the bodies safe and keeps the spirits closer to their ancestors.


9. Aokigahara

Japan's suicide forest is located at the base of Mt. Fuji and over an incredible 500 people have gone there to commit suicide dating back to the 1950's. Officials have posted devestating signs hoping to deter people from ending their lives with messages like, "Please consult with the police before you decide to die," and "Your life is a precious gift from your parents."


10. The Catacombs of Paris

Containing the remains of over 600 million bodies, these creepy catacombs exist in a 200 mile underground network and has become a tourist attraction over the years.


11. The abandoned city of Pripyat

Before evacuation due to the Chernobyl nuclear accident, this Ukrainian city had over 50,000 residents. Today it is completely abandoned and completely creepy.

12. Prague Jewish Cemetery

Several centuries old, this creepy and severely over crowded cemetery is said to house over 100,000 corpses but only 12,000 tombstones. The cemetery reportedly has bodies stacked upon each other as many as 12 graves high dating all the way back to 1478.


13. Cambridge Military Hospital

Looking straight out of a modern horror movie, this English hospital was operational and functioning from 1878 all the way up to 1996 when upkeep costs and asbestos shut it down. It's hard to believe it was open not that long ago considering how absolutely terrifying it looks inside today.


14. Sedlec Ossuary in the Czech Republic

Another creepy church composed of bones, this chapel is decorated with the remains of 40,000 corpses belonging to people who wanted to be buried in a holy place. Nothing says holy like skulls hanging from the ceiling, right?
