A family pet is a truly beloved member of your household and losing them can be absolutely devastating. One of the hardest parts about growing up and leaving home is communicating over the loss of a much-loved pet.

The thrilling "saga" that unraveled in a family group text message with Eric Schmidt's family took a twist that has left us jaw-dropped... and laughing hysterically. Beginning to end, this is a story we can all find somewhere to relate or laugh.

1. Breaking the news.

Learning about something like this is always rough.

2. Wow, that bomb dropped faster than expected.

Dad is pretty nonchalant, also. I'm impressed.

Cheryl Schmidt, Eric's mom and the star of this saga said:

I came home about 30 to 45 minutes after the burial, so I was still pretty emotional and trying to start dinner and my husband goes, 'I don't know how to tell you this but we buried the wrong cat.'

3. Are they reuinted?

Does it feel so good?

Cheryl described the moment:

She walks in and I’m crying and scoop her up in my arms, then we fed her and she promptly puked on the wood floor.

OK, that sounds like a normal cat.

4. "My human."

If she pukes on your floor, she's all yours...

However, if you think that's where the story ends then I've got news for you...

5. "But wait, there's more!"

I hope you fully grasp everything about this... moment.

If you think about it, this was supposed to be a nice gesture. I picture the thought process going as such, "oh, we buried someone elses cat, someone else out there needs closure. We will dig up this cat corpse and see if it has a chip in it."

Only to discover they buried a rabbit.

Of course, since we're all laughing right now we know that that request he added in about keeping the situation hush-hush was not listened to, not in the slightest. Eric shared the entire saga with the Internet via Twitter.

Now, that's what I call an unexpected ending with a hilarious twist.

Well... at least it's funny as long as you're not the dead rabbit.
