Why Is This Photographer Shooting People Doing Every Day Tasks... In the Nude? (NSFW)
It seems like nudity is just... so taboo. One would think that our own bodies are the most natural and not-terrifying thing we could be exposed to, yet for many, it seems like all we hear about is how inappropriate and unwanted our bodies are. Cultures all over that don't think twice about nudity seem to be a lot less stressed, while others can't even seem to get past a mother breastfeeding at the park without an uproar!
German Photographer, Sophia Vogel has decided to tackle the issue head on with a camera in hand. She says:
I want to point out that being naked should feel just as natural as being clothed. If you think of it right, we are all naked underneath our clothes.
Sophia enters the homes of her clients and starts things off simply by asking them about their hobbies, interests, and day to day activities. For her photo series, appropriately titled With and Without, she asks her clients to perform their tasks twice. Once dressed, the other, just the same but with no clothes. She captures both moments and presents them side by side for an eye-opening comparison.
Listening to Vogel speak about what has inspired her to take on this endeavor only helps us all understand the significance and passion behind her project.
The pressure of being a sexual being is omnipresent for every human being. We are observed and judged every day, and the fashion industry lavishes beauty ideals and criticism on us. We set high standards for ourselves. I want to speak up against these ridiculous standards.
By presenting all kinds of different body shapes and natural postures I would love to show that everybody is beautiful in their own way.
Her photos have absolutely zero sexual connotation or suggestion what-so-ever. Nudity is highly sexualized in our society, though, but that seems to be what makes her project so significant.
I love to present nudity in an aesthetic manner without any sexual context. Not every single nude photograph should be linked to sexuality.
Also noteworthy, none of Vogel's clients are models. They are all normal people who reached out to her directly because they believe in the message of her project. While so far it seems that only younger generations have taken an interest, Vogel likes to emphasize that's not intentional on her part and that she would love to have older generations participate.
Right now, I am unfortunately only able to get ahold of the younger generations, but I would love to photograph a wide age range.
