Redditor Calls Out Her Boyfriend For Buying A Vest Online And Passing His Dog Off As A Service Dog
“I told him he is morally corrupt for 1. Falsely portraying himself as a disabled person and 2. Falsely passing of an untrained dog as a service animal.”

Service animals are an essential part of many people's daily lives. They are highly trained animals that help people with disabilities navigate public spaces and significantly improve their quality of life.
Unfortunately, some people like to pass off their pets as service animals to gain the privilege of accessing public spaces where pets are banned. This makes life for individuals with legitimate service animals harder and causes problems for them.
Untrained animals often create a nuisance in the establishments they visit since they don't behave properly. An animal that did not get properly trained is often unpredictable and can cause harm to the people and service animals around them.
A Redditor who goes by the username u/United-Dragonfly323 made a post on the r/AmItheAhole subReddit where she explained how she called out her boyfriend as morally corrupt for passing off his untrained dog as a service animal. The user's boyfriend accused her of ableism and being insensitive to his mental health needs, which made her doubt the way she dealt with the situation.
The Reddit community had a lot of different reactions to the user's post. Scroll down to check out the full Reddit post, and scroll a little further to read the comments from the original post.
Here's the original post by Reddit user u/United-Dragonfly323:

OP got accused of ableism and not being sensitive to her boyfriend's mental health needs.

OP thinks she might potentially be the a-hole for the following reason:

Here's how the Reddit community reacted to u/United-Dragonfly323's post:

“The best realistic treatment for depression and anxiety is therapy and medication.”

Walking around with a fake service dog actively puts people with real disabilities at risk.

OP's concerns are valid, and her boyfriend's behavior is dishonest.

“Your boyfriend's actions are disrespectful to the people who rely on service dogs to perform necessary tasks...”

The boyfriend should seek professional help instead of faking disability.

The boyfriend's dog did not get formally trained in any way whatsoever.

What the boyfriend is doing is illegal.

This sort of behavior is a deal breaker.

“...people become less trusting of actual service animals because these pets do not act correct.”

OP's boyfriend should educate himself more about federal ADA service dog laws.

The boyfriend bought a 'designer dog' that can barely breathe.

The boyfriend is ruining it for other people who genuinely need service dogs.

The rules apply to everyone, and OP's boyfriend is no exception.

“Your partner is morally bankrupt and you are NTA.”

You can't scam the public just to feel better about yourself.

The boyfriend's actions are not fair to those with diagnosed conditions.

The problem goes much deeper than the boyfriend realizes.

OP did the right thing by making her boyfriend acknowledge the crime he is actively committing by pretending his dog is a service animal. He is ruining it for people with actual disabilities who rely on service animals to function in society.
