Wife of Band Singer Who Punched Guitarist Explains Why He Did It
We can’t imagine that a moment on stage like this would top Chris Rock’s slap, but here we are.
It was supposed to be another high-voltage Jane’s Addiction show, the kind where the crowd screams along and nobody expects fists. But mid-performance, Perry Farrell did something that instantly turned the night into a viral argument: he punched his bandmate, Dave Navarro. Fans were left scrambling for answers, especially once people backstage rushed in to stop things from getting worse.
Now Farrell’s wife, Etsy Lau, is stepping in with a first-person explanation, and her version makes the whole incident feel a lot less random and a lot more explosive. Here’s the full story.
Many fans were confused as to why he made this decision and what this could mean for the band’s future.
The frontman of Jane’s Addiction, Perry Farrell, was the one behind the punch and decided, in the middle of a performance, to punch his bandmate. Fans were absolutely shocked by the events that happened on stage, and they were confused as to why this occurred.
He punched his bandmate Dave Navarro, and soon after this, people came backstage to hold him back before things escalated even further. There have been multiple theories across social media as to why the lead singer decided to punch his bandmate on stage.
Reports from the show say that Farrell was shouting at the band during their song “Mountain Song.” They stated that he became visibly frustrated with the guitarist during “Ocean Size” and ended up shoulder-barging him before taking a swing.
WatchThisOneThis is a post that was directly from his wife’s Instagram account where she goes through the events that happened on stage.
This footage shows exactly what happened on stage before and during the events that transpired. Etsy Lau took it upon herself to speak out about her husband’s actions and clear the air before fans took what happened the wrong way.
She started her caption with, “Rather than speculating, I thought to post a first-person account of what happened on stage.”
“Clearly, there had been a lot of tension and animosity between the members. The magic that made the band so dynamic—well, the dynamite was lit. Perry got up in Dave’s face and body-checked him.”
She continued to say that his frustration was mounting the whole time during the performance. “He felt that the stage volume had been extremely loud and his voice was being drowned out by the band. Perry had been suffering from tinnitus and a sore throat every night.”
But when the audience in the first row started complaining to Perry, cursing at him that the band was playing too loud and that they couldn’t hear him, Perry lost it.”
We can totally understand his frustration during this time, and maybe some communication could have definitely helped.
His wife went into more detail about what happened after this event and what exactly took place backstage. She explained that the band was able to get through eleven songs before the show abruptly ended.

The adrenaline rush of live performances, compounded by personal challenges, can trigger aggressive reactions. This situation serves as a stark reminder that musicians, like other professionals operating under significant stress, could greatly benefit from emotional regulation techniques. Incorporating mindfulness practices and regular therapy into their routines might help these artists manage their stress more effectively, allowing them to channel their energy in a constructive manner rather than resorting to violence.
