Disney Inspired Artistic Pies Were Created To Be Equally Beautiful As They Are Delicious
"Food art has the ability to capture attention, draw people in, delight, and surprise."
Liz Joy spent nearly a decade working in Hollywood as an art director, where she fell in love with the lesser-known and often underappreciated forms of art, such as visual editing, overseeing events, and international marketing. Then she stumbled into baking. Liz says she "became enamored with product styling and photography," and "now pulls from her vast and varied creative experiences to help clients and their products stand out through the unexpected medium of food art."
Her edible art is dubbed "Inspired to Taste," and Liz says:
"Dessert design as an artistic medium is fascinating because it involves so many of the senses and becomes a fully interactive experience. What some may think of as a humble sugar cookie can be elevated into a spectacular showpiece, a donut can have personality, and a pie can tell a story. Food art has the ability to capture attention, draw people in, delight, and surprise."
While Liz makes all sorts of baked goodies, it's her pie (and pie art) that has really been taking the Internet by storm.
inspiredtotasteIn an interview with Forbes, Liz said:
"I posted my first decorated cookies a little over three years ago, and they happened to catch the attention of some well-known names, which quickly turned my accidental hobby into a legitimate business."
inspiredtotasteShe added:
"I’m still a home baker (no storefront) and am currently focusing on food-centric content creation and teaching cookie decorating techniques."

Joy is from and lives in Southern California, and what she refers to as her "narrative pies" feature pop culture characters that most people would (and do) recognize... but on pie!

Liz is entirely self-taught and has stated before that she learned how to bake and decorate by incorporating techniques she learned from YouTube videos.

In an interview with Daily Mail, Liz said that her pies can easily take three days to make:
"Pies generally take me at least a couple of days from concept to completion. That's assuming I don't destroy anything in the process."

She added:
"I'm always interested in learning new techniques and materials, and the trial-and-error process can tend to be a bit time-consuming and chaotic. I generally learn the most through trial-and-error and sheer stubbornness."

Liz also told Daily Mail what is awesome about specifically working with pie:
"One of the things I like about pie art is that I know I'll be working with a round canvas. So I'm always keeping that in the back of my mind, and I stay on the lookout for ideas that fit into that curved frame."

The process for each pie is thoroughly thought out and prepared for.

Liz draws up a loose sketch for each pie, which helps her decide and visualize all of the unique design components she will need for each end product.

After the sketching and pondering, it's time to decide on flavors, materials, and techniques.

Liz said:
"I then make templates for all the pieces, which I hand-cut and bake separately."

She continued:
"I usually blind bake the bottom crust, make the filling(s) stovetop, then piece the whole edible scene together once the individual elements have been decorated."
inspiredtotaste
And added:
"I attach the decorations with either chocolate, white chocolate, or melted caramel, depending on what coordinates best with the given pie."

Her favorite "narrative pie" was the Little Red Riding Hood pie: "It was the first narrative-style pie I created, and I was super excited with the outcome."
inspiredtotaste
She was also "pretty pleased" with the snow globe pie.

Liz has plenty of high-paying (and often famous) clients, but many of her pies are all hers to delight in and enjoy.
inspiredtotaste
"I've been lucky enough to eat at least a couple of slices of almost every pie I've posted to Instagram."

If you're looking at these edible works of art and thinking, "How can you even cut into that?" well, it's another question Liz has already answered!
"As long as I have photos of my dessert designs, I'm generally A-okay cutting into them, and I'm more than happy to partake in the consumption. I create my treats to taste good as well as look cool, and I really want them to be enjoyed."
