Talented Artist Creates 20+ Paper Arts Depicting Disney Characters, and It's All the Dopamine You'll Need Today
Don't we just love our Disney characters?
Jackie Huang is a skilled paper artist based in Los Angeles. After graduating from high school, Jackie moved to the vibrant city to attend the esteemed School of Cinematic Arts at the University of Southern California.
You would think that she would be done learning after graduating, wouldn't you? Not exactly, though. She returned to the classroom due to her desire to explore further.
This time, she pursued illustration at the Art Center College of Design. For fun, Jackie enrolled in a course called paper engineering while she was there.
As it happened, she was a natural, and the rest is history. She went on to say:
"I am a firm believer that nothing you learn goes to waste. Many of the concepts I learned in film school still seep into my work as an illustrator. In film school, a professor taught us to ask three questions when creating a new story: 1) What is this story about? 2) What is the message of this story? 3) (perhaps the most important question) Is this story worth telling? I continue to ask myself these questions, whether creating a single illustration, pop-up, or book." This sentiment is echoed by Dr. Angela Duckworth, character researcher, who states, "Enthusiasm for learning can be cultivated and is essential for achieving mastery in any field."

Jackie talked about a project that really stretched her craft, saying:
"A recent project that has pushed my skills and craft in a new direction is children's book publishing. I recently debuted my first book, 'Picky Panda.' As an illustrator, I was used to drawing a character in a single pose, but for this project, I had to draw the same character in varying poses and expressions, all while ensuring the character looked consistent."6. "In addition to that, the book itself required over 25 different illustrations to be completed in a short time. Combined with additional freelance work and gallery art, it was the greatest amount of illustrating I had done in a given year! And remember, all of these were still crafted by hand too! Creating a children's book has felt like a synthesis of all the skills I've learned so far from film school and illustration—storytelling, pacing, editing, composition, color, design, and more. It's been an amazing experience, and I am looking forward to seeing where this path leads."

The illustrator's bit of advice as an educator is that there is no such thing as right or wrong when it comes to art. In her workshops, she's frequently asked, "Is this okay?" or "Is this correct?"
Although there may be a "faster" or "easier" way to do a task, there is no "right" way to make art, and what you create won't appeal to everyone. All that matters is that you're creating something that makes you happy.
