Artist Creates Comics Where He Replaces Famous Disney Characters In Modern Day Life

We romanticize Disney characters, and who can blame us? They have strong personalities and aren't afraid to fight for what they believe in. But what if they lived in our world? Would that change them? Would they be like us, with our quirks and everyday problems? Would they assimilate into this image-driven society dominated by social networks?

One Indonesian Photoshop artist is not afraid to ask these questions. Andhika Muksin creates comics where she places famous Disney characters in modern-day scenarios and everyday situations. She regularly publishes her work on her social media accounts, and we have compiled a list of her best illustrations.

She says that some of her ideas come as a "full package," while others sometimes "cook" for a long time: "That's why I keep a log of all my ideas that come to my head. It's more like a journal or diary, but for my art."

Muksin says that finishing each illustration requires a different amount of time. Some images can be completed in an hour, while others may take days. "But never more than 3 or 4 days. This usually happens if I don't like the result and keep reworking it until I'm satisfied," the illustrator stated.

"I've always wanted to be an artist/illustrator, but not specifically a digital artist. I had an acrylic painting phase back then, but now Photoshop is just my preferred tool," he said.

The artist explained that over the last 15 years as an illustrator, he's learned that the process of finding one's creative style is as crucial as letting go for the sake of experimentation and testing boundaries.

Muksin loves Disney, but he doesn’t just reimagine the cartoon characters in realistic situations. He also photoshops Disney princesses into celebrity photos.

His love affair with Disney started when he was five or six years old, and he received a VHS tape of Alice in Wonderland as a birthday gift.

“I was obsessed with it. I would watch it almost every single day after school. Not long after that, the Disney Renaissance era started, and my obsession became a bit out of control, cementing my status as a Disney fanboy.”

Muksin fell in love with Disney characters and wanted to create fan art of them. “But instead of ‘remaking’ them in my own aesthetic style, I put a naughty twist on them. Over time, as I kept posting my Disney characters in real-life situations, I noticed that more and more people reshared them on their Instagram, and I received more and more positive DMs and comments as well. So I guess people liked them.”

When asked about his inspiration, the artist said that he gets ideas entirely randomly. He believes that we all relate to Disney because we grew up with these characters.

“These characters are constantly revitalized through a wide array of innovations, from Broadway shows, Disneyland rides, merchandise, and now live-action remakes. These elements have brought them to iconic status. So I guess they blend so well with our everyday lives because they are so well known,” he explained.
