Dutch Artist Creates Gorgeous Art Nouveau Series Featuring Iconic Disney Characters
Art Nouveau is an international style of art, architecture, and applied art, especially in the decorative arts.
As a style, Art Nouveau was most popular between 1890 and 1910, during a period that ended with the start of World War I, known as the Belle Époque period. In addition to a sense of dynamism and movement, Art Nouveau often utilized modern materials like iron, glass, ceramics, and later, concrete.
According to Dr. Helen Fisher, a biological anthropologist, "Art Nouveau reflects a deep appreciation for the natural world, emphasizing the beauty of organic forms and the connection between art and nature."
"It was a reaction against the academic art, eclecticism, and historicism of 19th-century architecture and decoration. It was often inspired by natural forms such as the sinuous curves of plants and flowers. One major objective of Art Nouveau was to break down the traditional distinction between fine arts (especially painting and sculpture) and applied arts."
Today, Art Nouveau continues to inspire artists across various mediums all over the world to create stunning pieces and even entire series that don't require an appreciation or even an understanding of art history to fall in love with. One such manifestation of this inspiration is through fan art.
When fandoms include skilled, talented, and passionate artists, you know you are going to see incredible things. Art Nouveau, as a style, has inspired some truly spectacular Disney fan art before, too.
Czech artist Hannah Alexander dedicated an Art Nouveau series inspired by artist Alphonse Mucha; she also created a separate series of Art Nouveau costume designs! Mimi, a Hungarian artist, also devoted an exquisite series of Disney characters in a very unique Art Nouveau-inspired style.
Today, we're obsessing over Dutch artist Paola Tosca. She lives in Sweden and is a freelance artist "in love with fairy tales."
Tosca is interested in strength training and cats, and her favorite princess is Belle because she is "smart, compassionate, and courageous." Outside of princesses, her favorite Disney character is Esmeralda from The Hunchback of Notre Dame because she is "compassionate, courageous, strong, and smart," and she "saved Quasimodo from the rack and the crowd, defied injustice, and even saved Phoebus from drowning!"
We are absolutely positive you'll love her Art Nouveau series, which was commissioned but has received countless and well-deserved praise from fans of art and Disney all over the world. Check it out below!
