Misogynistic Marvel Fans Asked Why Brie Larson Wasn't Smiling As Captain Marvel, and She Responded in a Heroic Way
It's been years since the movie came out, but the sexist trolls are still salty.
In 2014, Marvel Studios announced that it would produce the Captain Marvel movie as the studio's first female-led superhero film. Two years later, Brie Larson was officially introduced as the female superhero.
The movie premiered in 2019 and was received very well, both commercially and critically. It earned a whopping 1.1 billion dollars during its theatrical release worldwide, making it the first female-led superhero movie to do so.
Despite critical and commercial acclaim, the movie was controversial. Primarily, MCU fans had a lot to say about the studio casting Brie Larson in the role.
People were upset that they had turned Captain Marvel into a woman. They claimed it was a feminist agenda pushed by Hollywood to avoid getting canceled.
This anger was venomously expressed online by a group of misogynistic Marvel "fans" who couldn't accept that the Earth's mightiest Avenger is a woman. The moment the first movie trailer came out, they began foaming at the mouth.
They kept tweeting that Larson was too cocky as a superhero and that no other hero acted like that (as if Iron Man was a humble Joe). The fans asked why Larson portrayed the character as this stoic, unfeeling hero.
They questioned why she wasn't smiling during her scenes and if she was capable of other expressions. Some vowed not to watch the movie unless she was recast.
Larson, true to her character, responded to the trolls in a heroic way, if we do say so ourselves. She wasn't the type of person to let something so toxic go unpunished, and her response then is still worthy of applause even now.

Javon SwintWhy is this superhero so serious when all she had to do was save the world from an alien invasion?
Brett R. Smith
She'd be prettier if she smiled.
Major Turtle
They were so mad about her not smiling that they "fixed" it.
Turd Flinging Monkey
Yes, yes, that is so much better and not at all creepy.

When Brie Larson herself got wind of the ridiculous tweets, she responded, and fans were quick to notice.

Captain America was not smiling either; why not "fix" it too?

The only thing missing from Iron Man was this beautiful smile.

Smile, you genocidal maniac! You would have your own spin-off if you smiled more and brought sandwiches.

Agent Carter would have fallen in love faster with this look.
@heymermaid

Good God, that's attractive!

Don't forget to smile before watching the Captain Marvel official trailer!
These types of "fans" think that women, even superhero women, exist for their pleasure. They're probably expecting her to show up in skimpy armor with a warm apple pie in her hand.
Captain Marvel won't be playing to your fantasies, people. She's a superhero, not someone you can dictate to.
Take it up with Fury if you have a problem with it and see if he smiles at you. We do wonder if they could get away with saying this if Brie Larson were in front of them? We'd love to see that!
