Scientists Think They Can Get Away From Dropping Subtle Puns And This Tumblr Thread Is Pointing Them All Out
Scientists are not really as serious as the world makes them out to be.
Ever since we were kids, we have been conditioned to think that scientists, engineers, and doctors are truly respectable people who are very serious in their fields. While it is unquestionable that they are respectable, they certainly know how to have a good laugh with their work from time to time!
One thing about being a scientist is that they get to name the things they discover along with their experiments. Naming something for the world to call is certainly a pressuring responsibility, but these scientists took the opportunity and ran with it.
In a Tumblr thread, some people called out the not-so-subtle puns that scientists use as professional and official terms for certain things and phenomena in our world. They certainly know how to give us a laugh or two, even in the midst of the academic world!
Truly, not everyone can be serious all the time, and the silly side of us always comes out eventually. While scientists are sometimes depicted as nerds, they certainly have a knack for naming things in a familiarly punny way.
Come to think of it, the scientist who named Uranus sure got lucky that it was approved by the majority—or maybe it was a collective effort to name it, too. There's even a bird called Turdus Maximus, and it always gets a chuckle out of us whenever we hear it!
1. They saw the chance, took it, and flied away with it.
Noam Chomsky is indeed one of the most influential linguists, and it's an honor for that monkey to be named after him. Nim Chimpsky all the way!
Tumblr2. The scientists sure did know what the reaction of the people would be when they put that name out!
People on Tumblr sure are done with these puns, but they don't exactly hate them as much as they say they do! Behind this performative grimacing narrative are users secretly enjoying the existence of these puns in the science world.
We know.
Tumblr3. If I were a scientist, I would do that too. NGL!
They were clever, indeed. Imagine the giddiness of these scientists while trying to come up with a name and then going for "sonic hedgehog".

4. Imagine chuckling while explaining a life-threatening situation to a patient because it has a puntastic name.
We're just sitting here, imagining an animated blue hedgehog controlling our brain. No complaints!

5. So groan-worthy but so witty and genius at the same time!
These scientists certainly make learning these things a lot more fun. KUDOS!
That acronym is also pure genius, hands down. Such a complicated series of words with an acronym that perfectly explains it all—count us in.

6. Diary of a Wimpy Particle
Scientists aren't only getting creative with names; they also use them to insult poor particles, too. Can't say we're not behind them, though. The more you discover these hidden puns, the more you appreciate them!
