Arizona Man Survives 700-Foot Plunge on Mount Hood—Says ‘I’m A Walking Miracle’

Zwierzynski was navigating the challenging terrain of Mount Hood, one of Oregon's most iconic peaks, when disaster struck. While traversing the steep and icy Old Chute route at an elevation of around 11,200 feet, he suddenly lost his footing and fell a shocking 700 feet down the mountain.
The severe fall left him with multiple injuries, including broken ribs, a fractured ankle, brain bleeds, and a concussion. His wife, Laurie Zwierzynski, described the extent of his injuries in heart-wrenching detail, mentioning how his eyes were swollen shut, his eye sockets shattered, and his nose broken in two places.
Despite the severity of his injuries, Zwierzynski’s survival has been nothing short of miraculous. “Most of the doctors that I talk to, my friends, my family, everyone's using the word miracle like I'm some kind of miracle for having survived this fall," Zwierzynski told NBC affiliate KPNX. "Maybe I am."
The quick response from those nearby was crucial in saving Zwierzynski’s life. Off-duty military medics who witnessed the fall immediately descended to assist him, while two Mount Hood National Forest climbing rangers provided vital first aid.
The Oregon National Guard then airlifted him to a local hospital for emergency treatment. This rapid intervention undoubtedly played a significant role in his remarkable recovery.
Zwierzynski’s family expressed deep gratitude for the swift actions of those who came to his aid. In a statement, they said, “Chris was so blessed to have people there when the fall happened. The swiftness of aid was a Godsend. We are so thankful to the other hikers, the rangers, the rescue teams, and the hospital staff. They are true angels.”
To help cover the mounting medical expenses, a GoFundMe campaign was launched, quickly surpassing its initial goal of $5,000 and raising nearly $9,000.
The outpouring of support from friends, family, and even strangers has been overwhelming, reflecting the impact of Zwierzynski’s incredible story of survival.

Despite his near-death experience and the extensive injuries he sustained, he remains undeterred in his goal to conquer the highest peaks across the United States. “I’ll probably contact one of the guides and have them go with me, just so I don’t tempt fate,” he remarked with determination. “But I think it definitely is doable.”
