30-Year-Old Retaliates Against Her 60-Year-Old Single Aunt Who Asked Her If She Was Dating Yet
Christmas won't be complete without someone in your family asking if you're still single.
Show of hands: who here has attended a family reunion or even a get-together? Most of us, right?
If so, you know how those things go. You meet relatives you've never seen before, and you get introduced to a lot of people who have tons of stories about your parents that they can't share with you.
Although the food is good, there's a catch. There's always one, and this time, it's relatives asking if you're in a relationship, and if you answer no, they ask you why.
They ask why you're not dating and tell you that you better start looking because you're not getting any younger. Questions like these get old real fast, and most of the time, you can awkwardly wriggle your way out of them.
From time to time, when they catch you in a bad mood, it's easy to snap. Such was the case with one Reddit poster.
OP (original poster) broke up seven months ago with her partner of three years. Admittedly, she's having a difficult time with her first Christmas without her significant other.
She and her mom went to visit her 60-year-old aunt for Christmas. The first thing her aunt asked was, "Well, any new man yet?"
OP snapped and said, "Well, how about you? How come you aren't married yet?" The aunt was taken aback and stayed quiet for a long time while the rest of the family carried on with their conversations.
On the way home, OP's mom told her she was rude for answering that way because her aunt was just taking an interest in her and making conversation.

This redditor believes OP is the A**hole, as she could have politely told her no or whatever answer she was comfortable with.

In reply to the comment above, someone pointed out that the aunt's question was not only rude, it was also sexist.
zealous-grasschoice
Others were quick to point out that OP wasn't asked why she didn't have a new man; she was asked IF she had a new man.
gothiccmuse
The commenter doth project too much, methinks?
zealous-grasschoice
The aunt was just curious about OP.
gothiccmuse
It could have been phrased better, for sure.
JessiFay
But just because she asked, it doesn't mean she was being rude.
gothiccmuse
It may be a sore spot for OP, but it certainly wasn't unreasonable to ask her if she was back to dating seven months post-breakup.
IAMA_LongHorse
OP's rude "clapback" was uncalled for.
yogfthagen
It was seven months ago, not seven hours.
Late_Engineering9973
This person who related too much.
emmakobs
People of the internet being sensitive? No way.
firstladymsbooger
And apparently, the question wasn't too soon, seeing that OP is currently dating someone, according to some internet sleuths.
Sunnysmama
It is very irritating, and the emotion behind OP's *rude* response is totally understandable. Although, she did pick on her aunt like low-hanging fruit.
kindcrow
Yep, the aunt could have at least said Merry Christmas.
Jatulintarha
OP seemed to be determined to hurt the aunt with that specific response.
kindcrow
Plot twist: the aunt is not actually single, and OP forgot to mention it in her original post.
TheYoungWan
Reddit was confused, and so are we.
RhubarbSkein
Because it's a long-distance relationship, it doesn't count?
TheYoungWan
Come on, OP. We were mostly on your side.
RhubarbSkein
Short but sweet.
YourMoonWife
OP only shared the facts that made her look like the victim.
CradleofDisturbed
To be honest, we can't really be sure about the intention behind the aunt's question, but it certainly didn't warrant a rude response.
FoolMe1nceShameOnU
There may be a generational misunderstanding happening there.
Fluffy-Release6637
Yes, the question is intrusive, and yes, OP is rude. Both bad things can be true, and maybe the right answer is: everyone sucks here.
Peony42
This is a comment worth reading:

Judging by the aunt's silence after OP's response, she was definitely humiliated.
FoolMe1nceShameOnU
For that reason alone, OP is the a**hole.
FoolMe1nceShameOnU
After much deliberation and possibly reading all those comments, OP waved the white flag and admitted that she might have been in the wrong here.

What's a family reunion without a little bit of drama? OP's Christmas certainly wasn't boring, and for sure, the aunt won't soon forget this one.
OP learned her lesson not to be cruel to someone who annoyed her, and the aunt also potentially learned not to ask intrusive questions or not to direct them towards OP.
How's that for a serving of mild drama? How many aunts and uncles asked you if you were still single this year, and did you respond the way OP did?
