Adorable Pictures Of The African Rain Frog, The Grumpiest Looking Frog In The World
They are as grumpy as they are tiny.
At first glance, an African rain frog might make you wonder what has caused these creatures to appear so sad and grumpy. However, their expression doesn't necessarily indicate that they are actually sad; it's simply their natural appearance.
Native to the southern coast of Africa, these frogs live in six-inch-deep burrowed tunnels and, despite their tiny size, have the unique ability to stretch up to two inches long (approximately 5 cm). They belong to a burrowing species and reside on the fringes of forests.
These frogs do not need to be near water in order to survive. When confronted with a potential threat, they puff up and display an aggressive pose, which includes expanding their bodies to appear larger.
The increased body size helps the African rain frog feel safer by making it harder for predators to extract them from their holes. The female African rain frog secretes a sticky substance during the mating season to ensure the male's balance and prevent it from falling; this phenomenon is known as adhesive amplexus.
This illustrates the collaboration between males and females in the animal kingdom and what we, as humans, perceive as loyalty. Males and females complement each other in many different ways.
