AITA for Asking My Parents to Move Out After Unapproved Redecorating?

"AITA for asking my parents to move out after they redecorated my house without permission? Setting boundaries in my dream home caused family tension."

A 28-year-old woman refused to let her parents treat her dream home like a free-for-all makeover project, and the fallout got messy fast. At first, it sounded sweet: her late-50s parents offered to help with improvements after she and her husband bought their house two years ago.

But the “help” came with zero communication. Her parents started redecorating rooms, changing layouts, and buying furniture they knew they wouldn’t even like, all while claiming they wanted to “surprise” the couple. Every time OP politely asked them to stop, it turned into a loop: parents redo everything, OP and her husband undo it, then tension spikes again.

So when OP finally told them to stop or move out, it wasn’t just about paint and furniture anymore, it was about boundaries.

I'm (28F), married, and got a house with my husband two years ago. We've been working on decorating it just the way we like; it's our dream home.

The issue started when my parents (late 50s) offered to help with some home improvements. We appreciated it at first, but things took a turn.

Without consulting us, they started redecorating rooms, changing layouts, and buying furniture we didn't like. It was frustrating.

We politely asked them to stop but they ignored us, saying they wanted to 'surprise' us. It became a cycle of them redecorating, us undoing it, and tension rising.

In frustration, I told them they had to stop or find a new place to stay. They were hurt, but I stood my ground.

I appreciate their help, but boundaries must be respected. So AITA?

This is similar to the husband-wife couple who stood up to in-laws after they redecorated their house without permission.

The second OP’s parents changed a layout without asking, the “help” stopped feeling helpful and started feeling invasive.

After the polite requests got ignored, the couple was stuck in the same cycle, undoing redecorating just to breathe again.

When OP snapped and told her parents to stop or find a new place to stay, the “surprise” excuse finally ran out.

Now it’s all about whether OP was too harsh for protecting her marriage’s dream home, or just done with being steamrolled.

Nobody wants to live in a house that keeps getting “surprised” into someone else’s taste.

For another boundary clash, read what happened when someone asked their in-laws to leave after unauthorized redecorating.
