AITA for Hiring a Fake Vet to Calm My Cat at the Vets Office?
"Desperate cat owner hires fake vet to ease pet's anxiety at the vet - but was it a clever solution or a breach of trust? AITA?"
Some people don’t recognize a favor, they weaponize it. A 35-year-old woman thought she found the perfect hack for her cat Whiskers, who turns vet visits into a full-on wrestling match the second the carrier comes out.
Her cat scratches, hisses, and basically makes it impossible for anyone to even get close. So she took a suggestion from a friend in theater, hired an actor to pose as a fake veterinarian, and staged a fake consult room in her friend’s garage, complete with a white coat and a very serious act.
Whiskers actually bought it, but now the friend who helped her is calling it deceitful, and OP can’t stop wondering if she crossed a line.

So I'm (35F) and have a lovely cat named Whiskers who hates going to the vet. Every time I try to take him, it's a nightmare - he scratches, hisses, and makes it impossible for the vet to even examine him.
It stresses me out, and I'm sure it's not a pleasant experience for Whiskers either. For the past few visits, it has been such a struggle to get him in the carrier and to the vet that I decided to try a different approach.
My friend, who works in theater and knows a few actors, recommended hiring someone to pose as a fake veterinarian to spook Whiskers into being more cooperative. I thought it was a brilliant idea.
I hired someone to put on a white coat, set up a fake consultation room in my friend's garage, and pretend to be a vet. The plan was to take Whiskers in, go through the motions of the examination, and have the fake vet act all serious and scary to make Whiskers think it was a different kind of vet experience.
Long story short, Whiskers fell for it. The fake vet looked so convincing that he meowed in fear, sat still, and even allowed a fake injection.
It was a success in terms of getting him to calm down and cooperate. However, when I told my friend about this, she was shocked and said it was deceitful and wrong to manipulate Whiskers like that.
She thinks I crossed a line and should've handled the situation differently. Now I'm torn.
While I'm relieved that Whiskers is now more manageable at the vet, I can't shake the feeling that maybe I did something unethical. So AITA?
An animal behaviorist and author emphasizes that cats can experience significant anxiety during vet visits due to unfamiliar environments and scents. Research indicates that stress responses in cats can be mitigated by creating a calm atmosphere, which often requires preparation before the visit.
Using pheromone diffusers or familiar items, such as a favorite blanket, can help reduce anxiety levels. It’s crucial for pet owners to recognize these signs of stress and address them proactively to foster a more positive experience for their pets.

That’s when Whiskers, the same cat who usually claws at the carrier, actually meowed “in fear” and sat still for the fake injection.
A professional behaviorist often suggests gradual desensitization techniques, where a cat is gradually exposed to the vet environment in a non-threatening manner. This could involve short visits to the vet without any procedures being done, allowing the cat to explore the surroundings at its own pace.

Her theater-friend went from recommending actors to being shocked when OP told her what the “vet” was really doing.
This is also like the AITA where a person expected their disinterested family to join vacation plans.

Now OP is stuck between relief that Whiskers is calmer at the real office and guilt over tricking him into cooperating.
Veterinary professionals often recommend proactive measures to reduce anxiety in pets. This includes training sessions prior to visits, using calming products, and seeking behavioral advice from professionals. A respected veterinarian might suggest familiarizing pets with travel carriers or leashes well in advance, making the experience less daunting. When pet owners actively engage in their pets' mental well-being, they often see significant improvements in their pets' responses.

The whole thing blows up again in her head because the fake vet worked way too well, which makes the ethics feel even messier.

Instead of resorting to deceptive tactics, pet owners should seek to build trust with both their pets and their veterinarians. The emotional well-being of pets should be at the forefront of these interactions, as proactive measures can alleviate stress and ultimately strengthen the bond between pets and their owners.
