AITA for not chipping in on bills while living rent-free with family?

AITA for refusing to contribute to family bills while living rent-free? Conflicting views on expectations and financial support create tension.

Some people don’t recognize a favor, and this family apparently thinks “rent-free” comes with a built-in paywall. One guy moved back in with his parents and sibling after financial trouble, expecting it to be temporary, and he thought the deal was simple: he gets back on his feet, they let him land safely.

Then the ask changed. His parents insisted he didn’t need to chip in for rent since he was actively job-hunting, but they still wanted him to contribute to utilities and groceries. OP felt stuck, because they were doing fine before he moved in, so why suddenly ask when he’s the one struggling?

Now the tension has escalated to the point where they’re hinting he should find another place if he won’t help.

Original Post

I (27M) recently moved back in with my parents and sibling due to financial challenges.

I agreed, thinking it would be temporary.

Despite my parents insisting I don't need to chip in for rent since I'm actively job-hunting, they asked if I could contribute towards the utility bills and groceries. I was taken aback.

They earn well, but seeing as I'm not paying rent, it felt like a fair request. However, I couldn't shake the feeling that if they didn't need help paying bills before I moved in, why now when I'm just trying to get back on my feet?

I expressed my hesitation, but my family guilt-tripped me, saying they're doing me a favor by letting me stay without rent. It led to tension, with them now saying if I can't contribute, maybe I should consider finding another living arrangement.

I feel conflicted - on one hand, I appreciate their support, but on the other, I'm struggling financially. So AITA?

This is also like the job-hunting standoff where the OP asked, “Should I Pay Rent While Job-Hunting at Home?” and the tension kept rising.

OP’s job hunt was the whole “temporary” plan, but the moment his parents brought up utilities and groceries, the vibe shifted fast.

The argument got messier when OP pointed out his family didn’t need help paying bills before he moved in, and they hit him back with guilt.

Things turned into a full-on standoff after the rent-free favor felt conditional, with his parents basically saying, “contribute or move out.”

By the time OP is weighing appreciation versus survival, the family dinner energy is long gone and everyone’s counting money instead of days.

Nobody wants to work for free, especially when rent-free turns into “pay anyway” the second you move in.
