Am I Wrong for Refusing to Share Homemade Pet Treats with Friends Allergic Rescue Dog?

AITA for refusing to share my homemade pet treats tailored to my dog's allergies with a friend's rescue dog with allergies, sparking accusations of selfishness and heartlessness?

A 29-year-old woman refused to share her homemade pet treat recipe, and it turned into a full-blown friendship blowup faster than a dog snatching a dropped cookie.

She makes specialized treats for her own rescue dog, who has severe food allergies, and the whole thing is dialed in after a lot of trial and error. Her friend, 27F, has a rescue dog too, and she claims her dog is picky and also has food allergies, so she asks OP to either hand over the recipe or make treats for her dog.

But OP isn’t just being stubborn, she’s worried the wrong ingredients could genuinely hurt her dog’s friend, and that’s where the drama starts.

So I'm (29F), and I recently started making specialized homemade pet treats for my own dog, who has severe food allergies. These treats have helped my dog tremendously, and I've put a lot of time and effort into perfecting the recipe to suit his dietary needs.

My friend (27F) has a rescue dog who she says is very picky and has food allergies. She asked me to share my recipe or make some treats for her dog.

Understandably, I'm hesitant to share the recipe as it's something I worked hard on, especially since it's tailored to my dog's specific allergies. I politely declined, explaining that the treats are customized for my dog's needs and I'm not comfortable sharing them without knowing her dog's allergies in detail.

My friend got upset and accused me of being selfish, claiming that I should help since her dog has allergies too. She even mentioned that I was heartless for not helping a rescue dog in need.

I feel bad for her dog, but I also don't want to risk any potential harm by giving treats that may not be suitable. So AITA?

The moment OP explained the treats are customized for her dog’s specific allergies, her friend did not take it well.

NTA - You worked hard on that recipe and have a duty to prioritize your own dog's health. Your friend should understand that not all treats are suitable for every dog, especially those with allergies.

Instead of sharing the detailed allergy info OP asked for, the friend accused her of being selfish for not “helping” a rescue dog.

That's a tough spot to be in. Your friend should respect your decision, especially since you're looking out for her dog's well-being by not taking unnecessary risks. NTA.

It also echoes the pet lover who got backlash after refusing to share special homemade treats.

Your friend needs to appreciate the effort and care you put into your treats for your dog. It's not selfish to prioritize your own pet's health. NTA.

When the friend escalated to calling OP heartless, the whole request stopped sounding like a favor and started sounding like pressure.

She's asking for a lot by demanding your specialized recipe without knowing her dog's allergies. Your concerns are completely valid, so definitely NTA in this situation.

Now OP is stuck feeling guilty about the rescue dog, while still refusing to risk unknown allergy ingredients in someone else’s kitchen.

Your friend should understand that each pet has specific needs, and blindly sharing recipes could harm her dog. You're doing the right thing by prioritizing your own pet's health. NTA.
