Confronting Coworker for Stealing Lunch: Right or Wrong Move?

AITA for confronting my coworker who has been stealing my lunch every day at the office, leading to a tense situation at work?

A marketing agency reopening the office should have felt like a fresh start, but for one 29-year-old woman, it turned into a daily lunch nightmare. Her food kept vanishing from the communal fridge, and it was never a random “oops” moment, it was every single day.

She packs everything because of dietary restrictions and because buying lunch is expensive. So when she finally set a trap by labeling her sandwich with a fake ingredient no one else could possibly have, her coworker, a 30-year-old man, got caught taking a bite anyway. She confronted him in front of colleagues, he admitted it, and now the whole office is walking on eggshells.

So yeah, the question is whether calling him out publicly was the right move or scorched-earth behavior.

So I'm (29F) working at a small marketing agency, and we've recently returned to the physical office after remote work. For background, I've had ongoing issues with missing food from the communal fridge.

At first, I thought it might be a one-time thing, but my lunch kept disappearing every single day. Quick context: I always pack my lunches due to dietary restrictions and to save money.

Recently, I decided to set a trap by labeling my lunch with a fake ingredient I know wouldn't be found in any other office dish. Lo and behold, when I caught my coworker (30M) munching on my 'special' sandwich, he looked guilty.

I called him out in front of other colleagues, and he sheepishly admitted to taking my food, claiming he 'forgot' to pack his own. I lost it and told him how disrespectful and unacceptable it was to steal someone else's food consistently.

He tried to deflect, saying he was in a rush and thought no one would notice. However, this had been going on for weeks, and I felt violated and angry.

My coworker apologized, but the damage was done. Now, tensions are high in the office.

So AITA?

The communal-fridge mystery was already exhausting, and then she escalated it by putting a fake “impossible” ingredient on her lunch.

When she caught the coworker eating her sandwich, the guilt on his face and his “I forgot my lunch” excuse made it feel even worse.

Calling him out in front of other colleagues is what flipped the situation from “theft” to “office drama.”

Now that he apologized but the tension is still high, everyone is stuck wondering if she went too far with the public confrontation.
