Confronting Dog Owners Who Dont Pick Up After Their Pets: AITA Story
AITA for confronting dog owners who left their pet's waste in my yard, sparking a heated exchange and neighborhood gossip?
Some people really will step out of their house, glance at a familiar magnolia tree, and still decide the rules do not apply to them. This one started with OP just walking past the front door, doing nothing more dramatic than noticing a “couple bending down” in the yard like they were searching for something, not cleaning up dog poop.
Under the magnolia, the man was scooping up what he found and tossing it into the ground cover, right on OP’s property. When OP confronted them, the woman tried to shrug it off with, “We weren’t on our regular route,” then hit back with “There’s always a K**n,” before telling neighbors OP was awful. The complication? This subdivision has two doggie bag stations nearby, and OP says they sometimes have to rake leaves and pick up pine cones in that same area.
Now OP has to figure out whether calling them out made them the villain, or whether everyone else is just tired of pretending it’s fine to leave it there.

So, I was walking past my front door and glanced out. I was puzzled to see a couple bending down, looking at something in our yard, under our magnolia tree.
I stopped where was I heading and kept watching. Then I noticed a labradoodle sitting on the sidewalk next to the crouching couple.
The man grabbed a magnolia leaf and started to scoop something up. Then he threw what was in the leaf into the ground cover under our tree.
He started to scoop again, but then I went out and said "Hey! What are you doing?
Stop that!" when I realized it was dog poop he was tossing. The woman said "What do you want us to do?
We weren't on our regular route." I said "I want you to take a bag with you when you walk the dog and pick up after it. Or go get a bag and come back to clean it up.
It's the law. I don't want you to throw your dog poop into my yard." Then the woman said "There's always a K\*\*\*n." Now she's telling people in our neighborhood that I'm awful.
FYI, we have two doggie bag stations in the subdivision, one right around the corner from my yard. And we sometimes step in the ground cover to rake leaves and pick up pine cones.
I really don't want to step in dog poop when I do that. So, AITA here?

It’s a lot like the friend pressuring you to give up the puppy you’ve grown attached to.

OP watched the man grab a magnolia leaf to scoop the mess, and that’s when the whole “we didn’t mean to” excuse started to wobble.
The woman’s “we weren’t on our regular route” line would almost make sense, if they hadn’t been actively tossing dog poop into OP’s yard.
OP points out there are two doggie bag stations just around the corner, which makes the magnolia-leaf cleanup feel less like an accident and more like a choice.
And when the couple turns around and tells the neighborhood OP is “awful,” the argument stops being about poop and starts being about reputation.

OP might be the only one in the subdivision who actually wants to walk outside without playing yard roulette.
