Woman Buys A Motorcycle, Then Her Boyfriend Claims A “Free” Spare Part And Demands 100% Of The Cash From Selling It
A small add-on exposed a big entitlement problem.
A few hundred dollars can feel small next to a multi-thousand-dollar purchase, but it can still reveal a lot about someone’s mindset. That’s the question OP has carried for more than a decade after a fight with an ex-boyfriend over a “bonus” motorcycle part.
OP bought a used motorcycle with her own money and brought her boyfriend along to help inspect it. During the conversation, the seller mentioned she had recently upgraded the exhaust pipes.
OP’s boyfriend jumped in and asked if she still had the old pipes. She did, and when he asked if she’d throw them in, the seller agreed.
So when OP paid several thousand dollars in cash for the bike, the deal also included a spare set of pipes worth a few hundred dollars.
At first, OP thought it was a win for her. It didn’t even occur to her to ask about the old pipes, and she assumed her boyfriend was being helpful by securing spares. But once they got home, the tone changed.
Her boyfriend took the pipes to his place, started photographing them, and prepared to sell them on Craigslist. That’s when OP realized he didn’t see the pipes as something he got for her; he saw them as something he got for himself.
OP says she appreciated that he thought to ask, so she offered to give him a cut of the sale. She even suggested a 50 50 split. He refused and claimed the pipes belonged entirely to him because he was the one who asked for them.
OP argued the pipes belonged to her because the only reason they came home at all was her paying for the motorcycle. The argument got ugly, and OP eventually gave in and let him keep all the money.
Scroll through the screenshots below to see why this “small part” still feels like a grey area years later.
Let’s dig into the details

This wasn’t really about pipes. It was about credit, ownership, and how quickly a partner can turn a shared moment into a personal payday.
OP offered a fair compromise by acknowledging the idea while still recognizing who funded the purchase.
The fact that it became a fight until she relented is the part that sticks.
If you were in OP’s shoes, would you have split it, kept it, or walked away from the argument entirely? Share your take in the comments.
