Coworker Accused of Lunch Theft: AITA for Confronting Suspected Culprit?
AITA for suspecting my coworker of stealing my lunches? Colleagues weigh in on the dilemma of confronting without concrete proof.
A 27-year-old worker is dealing with the kind of office mystery that makes your stomach drop: their labeled lunches keep disappearing from the fridge. It’s been happening for two straight weeks, and at this point it isn’t “maybe I forgot it,” it’s “someone is taking it.”
The office is small, only about 12 coworkers, so the circle of suspects feels uncomfortably tight. OP even tried swapping up lunch times to catch the thief, still nothing. Then yesterday, they saw coworker Sarah eating what looked exactly like OP’s special pasta salad, and Sarah got defensive when OP mentioned it.
Now OP is stuck between not wanting to start drama and feeling totally violated, especially since Sarah looked flustered but didn’t have proof either way.

So, I'm a 27-year-old working in a small office with about 12 coworkers. Lately, I've noticed that my lunches have been disappearing from the office fridge.
It's been happening consistently for the past two weeks. At first, I thought I might have misplaced them, but then I started labeling my lunches, and they still vanished.
I've even tried altering my lunch times to catch the thief red-handed, but no luck. This situation has been stressing me out.
Yesterday, I saw my coworker, let's call her Sarah, eating what looked like my special pasta salad. I didn't outright accuse her since I didn't have concrete proof, but I did mention that it looked remarkably similar to what I made.
Sarah got defensive, saying she brought it from home. However, she looked flustered.
Now I'm torn. On one hand, I don't want to falsely accuse Sarah and create conflict at work.
On the other hand, I feel violated that someone is taking my food. I've considered bringing this up to our boss, but I'm afraid of causing drama.
So, AITA? I honestly don't know if I'm wrong here and need some outside perspective.

It’s giving the same energy as the coworker caught red-handed stealing a special office lunch.

OP went from “maybe I misplaced it” to full detective mode the moment the labeled lunches kept vanishing, right under everyone’s noses.
The tension spikes when OP catches Sarah mid-meal, because that pasta salad is not just similar, it’s suspiciously specific.
Sarah’s “I brought it from home” response lands awkwardly, especially since she looked flustered after OP said it looked like OP’s creation.
With no red-handed moment and a boss still in the background, OP has to decide whether confronting Sarah is safer than escalating the lunch theft rumor.
What do you think about this situation? Let us know in the comments.
OP might not be the villain for confronting Sarah, but this pasta salad situation could blow up the whole office either way.
