Man Shares Neighbor's Reaction After Wanting To Eat The Duck He Accidentally Killed

"If I'm paying $200 for a duck... you better believe I'm gonna eat it"

This one starts with a duck, a driveway, and a whole lot of bad timing. OP accidentally ran over his neighbor’s duck, then immediately tried to handle it like a normal, fixable mistake.

OP says he picked up the duck and carried it to his garage refrigerator, then asked the neighbor to choose between getting the duck or getting the money. The complication? The neighbor insists the duck is a pet, specifically one belonging to their family, and OP paid to replace it while also thinking he didn’t legally owe anything beyond that.

And once the kids were revealed to be 19 and 22, the whole “pet duck for the family” argument got even messier.

OP went from “oops, I hit the duck” to “want the duck or the money?” fast, and that’s when the neighbor’s tone probably changed.

OP has offered the following explanation for why they think they might be the AH:

I want to eat my neighbor's duck I accidentally ran over. He said the duck is his kids' pet. I paid for the duck.

After OP said he planned to store the duck in his garage fridge, commenters zeroed in on how wild it sounds to treat a pet like a receipt.

Also, if you think the duck situation is awkward, these public fashion mistakes will make you wince.

The thread really split when OP mentioned the neighbor’s kids are 19 and 22, not exactly little kids anymore, but they still claimed the duck as “their pet.”

From a Redditor who believes the OP is a mild AH

YTA, mildly. What if this was a pet dog? Wouldn’t you pay to replace it and also let the kids bury their pet? I get that you (and many others) look at pet ducks and dogs differently, but this family sees the duck as a pet and the idea of you eating it as no different than had it been their dog.

By the time OP offered to give the duck back if the neighbor forfeited the money, people were arguing about whether the math was fair or just missing the point.

In the comments, the OP revealed that the neighbor's kids are like 19 and 22 so they're literally not kids anymore. Also, the OP doesn't think he legally owed his neighbor anything.

Now OP is stuck wondering if paying for a duck was actually the wrong move.
