Dealing with Overbearing Mother-in-Law: Setting Boundaries in Parenting
AITA for standing my ground against my overbearing MIL who keeps interfering with my parenting decisions, causing tension in the family?
Some people don’t recognize a favor, and this mother-in-law is determined to “help” her way into OP’s baby’s schedule. One minute things are running smoothly, the next minute the routine is getting bulldozed, and the whole house is paying for it.
OP, 34, has a newborn and has been strict about feeding and napping times because it works. Her mother-in-law, who’s been overbearing and critical for years, visits and immediately disagrees. Even after OP explains the baby’s cues and the established routine, MIL keeps insisting she knows better, tries to feed the baby at her “correct” time, and knocks the schedule off track, leaving the baby fussy.
Now OP is stuck between keeping peace and putting her foot down, and the question is whether she’s crossed a line.

I (34F) have been facing a dilemma with my mother-in-law (MIL) regarding how to raise my children. For background, my MIL has always been overbearing and critical of my parenting choices, often disregarding my opinions.
We have a newborn baby, and I've been strict about following specific routines for feeding and napping which have been working well. Recently, my MIL visited and noticed that I wasn't feeding the baby exactly when she thought he was hungry.
Despite my explanations, she kept insisting I was wrong and even went as far as trying to feed him herself at the 'correct' time, disrupting our routine. This made the baby fussy and threw off his schedule.
I calmly explained to her that I appreciate her help, but it's essential to stick to the routine I've established. She got defensive, accusing me of being too uptight and not open to advice.
This led to tension between us, and I had to ask her to respect my decisions as the parent. Despite this, she continues to question my choices and offer unsolicited advice.
I'm at a loss on how to handle the situation without causing a rift in the family. So, AITA?

OP starts off calm and clear, but her MIL treats the newborn’s routine like it’s up for debate the second she walks in.
The challenges of maintaining a cohesive family dynamic are laid bare in the story of a 34-year-old mother grappling with the influence of her overbearing mother-in-law. The article highlights how such family interactions can profoundly affect a child's emotional landscape. When external voices intrude upon a parent’s established rules and routines, it can lead to confusion and anxiety for the child, undermining the stability that is crucial for healthy development. A child thrives when they understand who is in charge and what the expectations are. It becomes imperative for parents to articulate their parenting style while tactfully guiding relatives to support their decisions rather than challenge them. By doing so, parents can foster an environment of security and consistency, which is essential for the well-being of their children.

After the baby gets fussy from MIL’s “correct” feeding attempt, OP’s explanation turns into a full-on argument about who gets to decide.
MIL gets defensive, calling OP uptight and acting like advice is the same thing as permission, even when OP says stop.

The Reddit user's situation illustrates how vital it is to establish a respectful dialogue that honors parental authority while navigating familial relationships. By employing techniques such as 'I' statements and initiating regular family discussions, parents can create an environment that validates their decisions and strengthens family connections. This approach not only prioritizes open communication but also fosters a more harmonious family dynamic, allowing the mother to assert her authority while maintaining relationships that are essential for a supportive parenting experience.
This scenario underscores a common challenge faced by new parents who must assert their authority in the midst of complex family dynamics. The mother-in-law’s intrusive behavior may be rooted in her own experiences or a longing to remain relevant in the family, which often results in her overstepping established boundaries. The importance of open communication in such situations cannot be overstated, as it paves the way for mutual respect and understanding among family members.
OP is wondering if she’s the problem, but the baby’s schedule keeps proving who’s actually listening.
