Solo sequel confirmed, but Han and Lando return in a Star Wars comic, not a new movie

Lucasfilm confirmed Solo's first official sequel, but Han and Lando return in a comic, not a movie. It is set for fall 2027.

Fans who spent years wondering whether Solo: A Star Wars Story would ever get a follow-up finally have an answer. Han Solo and Lando Calrissian are returning, but not in the kind of sequel many viewers expected.

Han and Lando are back, just not on the big screen

Lucasfilm used New York Comic-Con 2026 to confirm an official continuation of Solo: A Star Wars Story. Instead of another theatrical release, the next chapter is a comic called Star Wars: Smugglers & Scoundrels: The Black Sun Eclipse.

The story is set two years after Solo and brings Han Solo, Chewbacca and Lando Calrissian together again. Their problem is a debt owed to Black Sun, the criminal organization. Han thinks he has a way out, but an approaching eclipse gets in the way.

Adam Lance Garcia is writing the comic, with art by Liana Kangas. Mad Cave Studios will publish it through its Papercutz label in fall 2027. That makes it the first official sequel to the movie's story, even if it is arriving on the page rather than in theaters.

Why this matters to Solo fans

The 2018 film was Disney's attempt to tell an earlier chapter of Han Solo's life. Alden Ehrenreich played the younger Han, Donald Glover played Lando Calrissian and Emilia Clarke appeared as Qi'ra. The movie also covered Han's bond with Chewbacca and his first encounter with the Millennium Falcon.

Its theatrical run did not deliver the result Disney wanted. Solo brought in about $393 million worldwide against a reported production budget close to $300 million, and the outcome looked worse once marketing costs and theaters' share of ticket sales were factored in. The production itself was also rocky, with Phil Lord and Christopher Miller leaving during filming and Ron Howard stepping in to complete the movie.

Disney never moved ahead with an immediate theatrical sequel, so this comic marks a real change for anyone who thought the story had been left behind eight years later. It does not mean a new Solo movie is on the way, though. Lucasfilm has not announced plans to bring Ehrenreich back for another film, and Glover's Lando project, which began as a Disney+ series before shifting toward a theatrical movie, still has no release date.

For now, the update that affects Solo fans is simple: the continuation exists, it is officially happening in comic form, and it is scheduled to arrive in fall 2027.
