EPCOT Is Concreting Over One of Its Newest Nighttime Effects

One of EPCOT’s newest visual features is already being scaled back. Disney is removing much of the in-ground lighting built into World Celebration Gardens and filling the empty channels with concrete after repeated problems in the park’s central courtyard.

A high tech walkway feature is being stripped out

World Celebration Gardens was presented as a major focal point in EPCOT’s multi-year transformation, linking the park’s reworked neighborhoods through a landscaped hub centered on a Walt Disney statue. When the space opened in December 2023, one of its signature details was a series of color changing lights set directly into the concrete walkways.

The effect blended greenery and technology in a way that nodded to EPCOT’s past while adding a modern nighttime layer. The illuminated lines curved around the central planter in a layout that echoed the classic EPCOT logo from above, and the system was designed to coordinate with the Beacon of Magic effects on Spaceship Earth.

That is the piece now being pulled back. As of October 2026, construction crews have removed much of the installation and are filling the former lighting channels with concrete. Some of the original lights are still in place, but a large portion of the feature is no longer there.

What went wrong, who notices it, and when the change is happening

The lighting system began showing problems almost immediately. Malfunctioning sections were documented as early as the day after guests first entered the area. Some parts went dark, while others displayed colors that did not seem to match the surrounding effects.

Later, the issue was no longer only about lighting performance. Protective covers over parts of the installation were reported as warped or cracked, and some sections lifted above the surrounding pavement. In a busy pedestrian space, that created a potential tripping hazard for guests walking through the courtyard.

Disney tried to keep the system going. During 2025, repair work included screws driven through sections of the translucent covers into the concrete below. Some areas also showed paint and caulking. Barriers, rope lines, rolling hedge walls and potted plants were used around affected parts of the walkways and central planter, limiting access while work continued.

The exact technical cause has not been publicly established. What is clear is that the fixes did not fully solve the problem. Crews began removing lighting tracks around the planter in August 2026, and the work has continued in phases through late summer and early fall. By October 2026, about two-thirds of the pavement lighting had been removed, making this a visible change for EPCOT visitors right now, especially anyone crossing the heart of World Celebration Gardens.
