Disney Reveals Monstropolis Street Name as New Theming Nears Installation at Hollywood Studios
Disney shared a new Monstropolis update for Hollywood Studios, including Dark Avenue and building finishes that could start appearing within weeks.
Disney has pulled back the curtain a little more on Monstropolis at Disney's Hollywood Studios. The 2027 expansion still does not have a specific opening date, but a new behind the scenes update points to visible theming arriving on the land's buildings within weeks.
Dark Avenue and more of Monstropolis come into focus
The biggest change in Disney's latest look at the Monsters, Inc.-themed land is that the project is moving closer to the stage where guests may be able to spot finished design elements taking shape on the real structures, not just in concept art or test pieces.
Imagineers said they are building and evaluating mock-ups and textures for the land's detailed finishes, and that some of that work could begin transferring onto the actual buildings within a couple of weeks. Disney also showed a closer look at windowsills with tooth-like styling, part of a broader plan to make the city feel as if monsters really live there. Across the land, the architecture is expected to include features inspired by teeth, eyes, horns, and other monster traits.
Disney also confirmed a major piece of the land's layout. Monstropolis' main street will be called Dark Avenue. That corridor is set to guide guests past several key locations, including Harryhausen's, Archie's Scare Pig Pizza, shops, the Welcome to Monstropolis show, and the Monsters, Inc. Laugh Factory coaster.
That coaster remains the headline attraction for the new area. Disney is using a suspended coaster system inspired by the door vault sequence from Monsters, Inc. The ride is positioned as the centerpiece of the land, but the new update makes clear that the surrounding city itself is also a major part of the experience, with themed buildings, dining, shopping, and entertainment lining the route toward the coaster.
For Disney fans tracking construction at Hollywood Studios, the immediate takeaway is simple: Monstropolis is still slated for 2027, there is still no exact opening date, and this update does not confirm an earlier debut. What it does signal is that the project is reaching a point where the land may start to look much more recognizable as crews begin applying final decorative elements to the buildings.
