Why One Overhead Photo Suddenly Makes Disney World’s Villains Land Feel Real
A new aerial image gives Disney fans a clearer look at Magic Kingdom’s Villains Land, including its scale, story setup and two rides.
Magic Kingdom’s villains expansion just got a lot easier to picture. A new aerial image is giving Disney fans their clearest construction-era look yet at Villains Land, while Disney’s previously shared ride and story details show this is shaping up as a full land, not a small add-on.
The newest clue about Magic Kingdom’s coming villains expansion is not a fresh piece of concept art. It is an overhead construction image from Bioreconstruct that shows the growing footprint tied to Villains Land and to Piston Peak National Park, the Cars-inspired project connected to the reimagining of the Rivers of America.

For park fans, that is the immediate change. There is now a much more concrete look at how large this overhaul appears from above, even though Disney still has not announced when the new land will open.

What Disney has already locked in
Disney had already outlined the project in more detail this summer during the Disney Experiences showcase, Horizons: A Carousel of Progress, at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event. Imagineering President and Chief Creative Officer Bruce Vaughn and Executive Creative Director Caroline May confirmed the land’s official name, Villains Land, and introduced its central story along with its two main attractions.
The expansion was first announced at D23 in 2024. Disney has also said the area is being designed on a scale comparable to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, with dining, shopping and other experiences planned as part of the build. That is significant for future Magic Kingdom visitors because Disney is presenting this as a substantial new destination inside the park.

A new story, plus two headline rides
Instead of recreating scenes from specific animated films, Villains Land will use an original story inspired by Walt Disney Animation Studios characters. Guests will enter a foreboding forest and find a ruined Wishing Well after an unknown person made an evil wish. Disney says the well’s poisoned magic spreads through the forest and draws villains in to claim the area and build their own lairs, from fortresses to palaces.
One of the two featured attractions is a Maleficent roller coaster based on Sleeping Beauty. Riders will take her invitation and race through enchanted briars around her mountaintop fortress. Imagineering has said the coaster will include elements the team has not attempted on similar attractions.
The other is a dark ride hosted by the Magic Mirror. It starts in the catacombs beneath the Evil Queen’s palace before moving into the Mirror Realm, where guests will encounter multiple villains through a mix of special effects and physical sets. Disney says more details are still on the way, but the coaster’s final name, track layout, technical specifications and opening date have not been revealed, and the dark ride’s full character roster and ride system details remain under wraps.
