Why Two Disneyland Princess Meet and Greets Suddenly Went Missing
Disneyland’s regular character lineup no longer includes Elena of Avalor and the live action Ariel meet and greet near 'it's a small world.'
Disneyland visitors looking for two specific princesses may come up empty right now. Elena of Avalor and the live action version of Ariel are no longer part of the park’s regular meet and greet lineup, a quiet shift that changes two very different character experiences at Disneyland Park.
Two princess encounters have dropped off Disneyland’s regular lineup
Character greetings are one of the most recognizable parts of a Disneyland visit, but they are not fixed forever. Disney changes entertainment offerings throughout the year, and that can include adding characters, moving them, or ending regular appearances without much fanfare.
That appears to be what has happened with two princesses at Disneyland Park. The characters no longer regularly greeting guests are Elena of Avalor and the live action version of Ariel from The Little Mermaid (2023).
The change matters because these were not duplicate experiences in the same space. Each character had her own distinct setting, and each served a slightly different corner of Disney fandom. One was tied to a cultural celebration. The other gave fans of Disney’s 2023 live action remake a version of Ariel that was separate from the animated classic character guests have known for years.

Elena of Avalor’s appearance was tied to a seasonal celebration
Elena had been meeting visitors outside Royal Hall in Fantasyland. Her appearances were part of Disneyland’s Hispanic and Latin American Heritage Month offerings.
That context helps explain why this particular greeting may have been more temporary than some guests expected. As that heritage celebration wraps up, Elena’s scheduled appearances have also concluded.
For younger Disney fans, Elena has been an especially recognizable princess because of the animated series Elena of Avalor. Her presence also offered something a little different from the traditional princess roster, since she is not always included in the same way as characters such as Cinderella or Snow White.
Disney has not announced when Elena might return for another meet and greet, so guests planning a trip should not count on finding her in her previous Fantasyland location.
The live action Ariel meet and greet had become its own small destination
The other disappearance may be even more surprising to some visitors because it had lasted much longer. Disneyland introduced the live action Ariel in May 2023, around the theatrical release of The Little Mermaid (2023), and she had continued appearing near 'it's a small world.'
This was not simply Ariel in a new dress. The character was modeled on the live action film version, inspired by Halle Bailey’s portrayal. She wore the blue dress seen during the movie’s 'Kiss the Girl' sequence, giving the encounter a look that set it apart from Disneyland’s long running animated Ariel appearances.
The setting also went beyond a basic photo stop. Disneyland built out the area with details connected to Ariel’s story, including treasures, maps, King Triton’s trident, and Scuttle. Those touches made the location feel themed rather than generic, and for many guests that likely made the meet and greet feel like a destination of its own.
Now, more than three years after that debut, the regular appearance has ended. That does not mean Ariel is gone from Disneyland altogether. The change applies to the live action version, not the animated Ariel who remains a separate part of Disney’s character offerings.

What Disneyland has and has not said
Disneyland has not given a detailed public explanation for either departure. There is also no indication that either character has been permanently ruled out from returning.
In Elena’s case, the connection to Hispanic and Latin American Heritage Month offers an obvious reason her run would conclude with that celebration. Ariel’s situation is different because her greeting continued long after the 2023 film opened, but Disneyland has not confirmed whether she could return for special events, seasonal offerings, or future entertainment changes.
For guests, the bigger takeaway is practical. Character greetings can shift based on seasonal celebrations, entertainment scheduling, and other operational decisions. Anyone planning a visit around a favorite princess should check the Disneyland app for current information and ask Cast Members about availability and locations.
Even that is not a perfect system, because the app does not always list every possible character encounter. Surprise appearances can still happen around the resort. But for now, guests should treat both Elena of Avalor and the live action Ariel meet and greet as unavailable in Disneyland’s regular lineup.
