Disney’s Last Original Splash Mountain Is Going Dark in January, With a Reopening Already Set

Tokyo Disneyland’s Splash Mountain closes Jan. 7, 2027 for refurbishment and is scheduled to reopen Feb. 5.

Tokyo Disneyland’s Splash Mountain, now the only original version of the ride still operating at a Disney park, is set to close on January 7, 2027. The closure is listed as a refurbishment, not a permanent shutdown, and the attraction is scheduled to return on February 5.

The change matters most for guests planning winter visits to Tokyo Disneyland, where Splash Mountain sits in Critter Country. Anyone hoping to ride during that period will need to plan around a nearly month-long closure.

Tokyo’s attraction opened in October 1992 and has remained close to its original form. It still features Br’er Rabbit, Br’er Fox and Br’er Bear, uses music from Song of the South, runs about 15 minutes and sends riders in eight-person logs down a 52-foot drop at a 45-degree angle.

That makes it a standout in Disney history. Splash Mountain first opened at Disneyland Park in 1989, then expanded to Magic Kingdom and Tokyo Disneyland in 1992. In 2020, Disney said the two US versions would be replaced with a Princess and the Frog inspired attraction. Magic Kingdom’s Splash Mountain closed in January 2023, followed by Disneyland’s in May 2023. Both have since reopened as Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, a story set after the events of the animated film.

The temporary Tokyo closure arrives with long-running questions about whether that version could eventually be rethemed as well. Tokyo Disney Resort is owned and operated by The Oriental Land Company under a licensing agreement with Disney, and speculation around the ride’s future has continued for years. More recently, attention has grown after Splash Mountain’s gift shop closed in November 2024, the attraction lost its Kao Corporation sponsorship in 2025, and a Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah sign was removed in early 2026.

There have also been suggestions that a broader retheme has been discussed, with disagreement over costs slowing any change. For now, though, the only confirmed update is the calendar window: Splash Mountain at Tokyo Disneyland is due to close January 7, 2027 and reopen February 5, 2027.
