A Homemade Hatbox Ghost Costume Just Recreated Haunted Mansion's Signature Illusion
A freelance SFX artist shared a Haunted Mansion Hatbox Ghost costume that makes the character's disappearing face effect work.
One Disney fan has built a Haunted Mansion Halloween costume with a trick that is hard to ignore. Their Hatbox Ghost look does not just reference the character. It recreates the disappearing face effect that made the figure famous.
A special effects artist and Disney fan has turned the Hatbox Ghost into a working homemade costume for Halloween. The build mirrors the Haunted Mansion character's recognizable effect, with the glowing face vanishing from the mask and appearing inside the hatbox prop while the performer copies the figure's turning and bobbing movement.

The costume was shared by Instagram user sharp.shot.efx, who describes themselves as a freelance SFX artist. In the clip below, they perform the illusion while presenting the character's familiar motion.
The post was shared with the line, "Grim Grinning Ghosts come out to socialize!" The artist also said the Hatbox Ghost is one of their favorite things they have made so far, and added that they hope to give the costume an overhaul in the future so it can compete again.

Why this fan build drew extra attention
The costume did not stay confined to one post. Hollywood Horror Museum, a nonprofit film history museum in Los Angeles, shared it on X and called the creation "absolutely brilliant."

That reaction is notable because fans looking for a store-bought Haunted Mansion costume do not currently have this character in a recent retail lineup. Spirit Halloween introduced a collection based on the attraction, but the available looks include Constance Hatchaway, Alexander Nitrokoff, Sally Slater, and other mansion residents rather than the Hatbox Ghost.
Taken together, that helps explain why this version stands out for Disney parks fans. It tackles a character missing from the retail collection and recreates the special effect most closely associated with him.

What the Hatbox Ghost illusion is
The Hatbox Ghost is one of the best known visual gags from the Haunted Mansion. The character appears to carry a hatbox while its head seems to vanish from its shoulders and reappear inside the box. The effect works because your eye follows the brightest face in view. If the face on the body is hidden, dimmed, or blended into darkness while a second face in the hatbox is lit, the brain reads it as a single moving head rather than two separate props.

How fans usually recreate it
A homemade version is usually built from simple stage magic principles, not complicated robotics. Common approaches include a black hood or veil to hide the wearer’s real head shape, a false collar or shoulders to sell the empty neck line, and a second face placed inside the hatbox. That second face might be a mask, a printed image behind a dark screen, or a small display. Matte black fabric helps unwanted parts disappear, while selective lighting inside the box makes the face pop.

Practical costume tips
For a wearable version, test it in the same kind of lighting where you plan to use it. Effects that look great in a dark room often fail in bright daylight. Keep the hatbox light, secure it with a sturdy handle, and make battery access easy. Avoid shiny materials, which can reveal hidden seams. Make sure you can see clearly, breathe comfortably, and walk safely. In crowded spaces, a spotter is useful, especially if the costume limits peripheral vision.
