A Mother Asks People Online If Her Son Should Return or Keep What He Found in a Thrifted Item

What is the right thing to do if you find cash in an item you bought from a thrift store?

Book shopping can be likened to a magical experience, particularly if you don't know which writer or genre you're looking for. There are a vast number of choices, and when you make your selection, prepare for a takeoff into the world of imagination.

What could be even more invigorating is a trip to your nearest thrift shop. Since the books are already used, they somehow seem more valuable as you begin to ponder certain things, like what the owner's story was, whether they had a good life, or if they are still alive.

A woman with the username @bebe1969 shared an interesting post on Twitter. Her 30-year-old son purchased a copy of “A Clockwork Orange” at Goodwill, and when he got home, he found $500 hidden among the pages.

So, she asked what you would do in that situation. The Twitter discussion resembles a conflict of morals.

Some say that the cash should be returned to the owner or donated to charity. Others argue that finding $500 was a stroke of luck or that it was meant to be discovered by the new owner.

An American comic, rapper, and entertainer named Andy Milonakis also supports the idea of donation. He suggested purchasing and giving away books worth half of the OP's son’s found money while keeping the other half for himself. However, he strongly advises against spending it on something specific.

It’s not every day you come across free money lying on the floor or hidden in an old book.

The OP also mentioned that her son was extremely happy and wanted to keep the cash, but @bebe1969 took it to the online community for an engaging conversation.

Anyway, according to the comments, it seems like it would be difficult to find the owner of the thrifted book, as Goodwill doesn't track the people who donate items.

Additionally, some users argue that returning the cash to Goodwill is a poorly conceived notion, as the organization resells the products and profits from them. This is why they believe that the OP's son should consider giving the cash to struggling individuals.

The inquiry sparked a heated discussion regarding the cash.

On the other hand, many individuals said that since the OP's son bought the book, it completely permits him to keep the cash he found inside without any guilt.
