Hollywood Studios' first Monstropolis facade is finally visible, and it comes with a scream can joke

Scaffolding is down on Monstropolis' first finished facade at Disney's Hollywood Studios, revealing themed restrooms and Pixar details.

Monstropolis has moved from concept art to something guests can actually spot on the skyline at Disney's Hollywood Studios. The first finished facade in the new Monsters, Inc. land has been uncovered, offering the clearest look yet at how Disney World is shaping its monster city.

The first completed exterior is now out in the open

Scaffolding has come down on the first finished building facade in Monstropolis, the Monsters, Inc. themed land under construction at Disney's Hollywood Studios. The building contains restrooms next to Archie’s Scare Pig Pizza, the quick-service restaurant planned for the area.

The design is packed with monster-world touches. Teeth and horns frame the windows and roofline, steel covers the corners, and the shingles mix blue with cream and brown accents. A water tower sits on top. The most obvious visual gag is a bright yellow sign on the brick wall reading "TRY OUR CANS," with "Can Co." above it, a reference to the scream canisters used in Monstropolis.

What this reveal says about Disney World's Monsters, Inc. land

The newly visible facade also shows how deep Disney is going with Pixar references. Archie is the six-legged Fear Tech mascot from Monsters University, and Disney has already said the land will include Harryhausen’s, the sushi restaurant seen in Monsters, Inc., a Monsters University Alumni Club, and a show at the Glob Theater featuring a song by Randy Newman. Disney has also said Mike and Sulley will serve as the land’s hosts.

The marquee attraction is still the door coaster based on the movie’s door vault chase. Disney has described it as the first suspended coaster in a Disney park and the first Disney coaster with a vertical lift.

Who it affects, and when guests can expect it

For Disney World visitors, this is the first substantial look at a land that will replace part of the former Muppets Courtyard. Archie’s Scare Pig Pizza is taking over the former PizzeRizzo building, while the coaster is being built on what was a backstage cast parking lot.

Disney has said parts of Monstropolis will open to guests in 2027, while work continues on the coaster. An exact opening date has not been announced, and Disney has not given an opening year for the coaster itself.

Recent construction milestones have moved quickly. The first coaster supports went up in late April, track installation began in summer, the themed restrooms first appeared in early August, the Glob Theater lost its scaffolding on Sept. 2, and bricks were added at the land’s entrance on Oct. 19. During the week of Oct. 19, Hollywood Studios cast members also signed a black coaster beam using door-shaped stickers featuring Mike and Sulley.
