Friend Lets Ferret Escape, Refuses to Split Vet Costs: AITA?

"Debating splitting vet costs after friend's carelessness led to ferret's injury - AITA for expecting her to share the financial burden?"

Some animal lovers will do anything for their pets, and OP is basically living proof. Their ferret, Fudge, is not just a pet, he is the whole heart of the home, and OP says they spare no expense to keep him safe.

Then Sarah comes over for a visit, OP reminds her to be careful with doors, and the front door still gets opened. The second Sarah steps out to make a call, Fudge bolts, disappears for hours, and comes back with a sprained leg and a pile of vet bills. Sarah admits she feels awful, but she insists it was an accident and refuses to split the costs.

Now OP has to decide whether protecting Fudge is worth risking the friendship.

Original Post

So I'm a huge animal lover, and I have this adorable ferret named Fudge. He's my little buddy, and I spare no expense when it comes to his care.

Recently, my friend, let's call her Sarah, was over for a visit. She's not used to pets, and I always make sure Fudge is secure during visits.

During Sarah's visit, I asked her to be careful when doors are opened because Fudge is quick and loves to explore. Unfortunately, Sarah wasn't as cautious as I hoped.

She opened the front door to step outside for a call, and Fudge darted out before she could react. It took us hours to find him, and he ended up getting into some mischief. Fudge ended up with a sprained leg and needed some treatments.

The vet bills were quite high, and now I'm stuck with this unexpected financial burden. Sarah feels terrible about what happened but says that it was an accident and doesn't think she should be responsible for the vet bills.

She argues that it wasn't intentional and accidents happen. I understand it was unintentional, but I can't help feeling like if she had been more careful, this could have been avoided.

I'm torn because I value our friendship, but I also feel like she should at least offer to contribute to the vet bills since it was her carelessness that led to this situation. So, would I be the a*****e if I refused to split my ferret's vet costs with Sarah?

This also feels like the neighbor’s fight over refusing to split cats medical bills after their dog injured him.

OP is already on high alert during visits, because Fudge is basically a tiny escape artist with a talent for door-related chaos.

The moment Sarah opens the front door to make her call, the whole plan collapses, and Fudge is gone for hours.

Even after Fudge comes back with a sprained leg, Sarah’s “it was an accident” argument hits OP right in the wallet.

Now OP is stuck between keeping Sarah in their life and demanding at least some responsibility for the vet bills tied to that door mishap.

We'd love to hear your take on this situation. Share your thoughts below.

Nobody wants to pay for Fudge’s escape just because Sarah thought “accident” covered it.

Wait, this other AITA case is about refusing to share rabbit special diet costs after a friend’s accident, too.
