Friends Dog Ruined My Shoes: Should I Refuse to Pet Sit Again?
"Would I be the asshole for refusing to pet sit after my friend's dog destroyed my favorite shoes? AITA dilemma over pet sitting request."
A 27-year-old dog lover is now stuck in the worst kind of friendship drama, the kind where the culprit has four legs and the victim is her favorite pair of shoes.
Her friend, a 29-year-old guy, asked her to pet sit his adorable dog, Daisy, for a weekend trip. Everything was fine until one morning when she discovered Daisy had chewed up her limited edition shoes, the ones she saved up for months to buy. When she confronted her friend, she expected an apology or at least some compensation, but he basically shrugged and said, “Dogs will be dogs.” Now he wants her to do it again, and she cannot tell if refusing makes her the a-hole.
Here’s the full story of how Daisy’s chewing turned into a real trust test.
Original Post
I'm (27F) a huge dog lover. My friend (29M) asked me to pet sit their adorable dog, Daisy, while they went on a weekend trip.
Everything was going well until one morning when I found Daisy had gotten ahold of my favorite pair of shoes and completely chewed them up. These weren't just any shoes; they had sentimental value and were a limited edition I'd saved up for months to buy.
I confronted my friend about it, expecting at least an apology or an offer to compensate, but instead, he brushed it off saying, 'Dogs will be dogs, what can you do?' I was shocked by his lack of concern and respect for my belongings. Now, my friend is planning another trip and has asked me to pet sit Daisy again.
I feel conflicted. On one hand, I love Daisy and enjoy spending time with her.
On the other hand, I can't shake off the feeling of resentment towards my friend for not taking responsibility for the damage Daisy caused. Would I be the a*****e if I refused to pet sit for them this time?
So, AITA?
Pet ownership comes with a unique set of responsibilities, and understanding these can help avoid conflicts among friends.

OP brought up the damage, and her friend answered with a shrug instead of an apology or money for the replacement.

Now he’s planning another trip, and OP has to decide if she’s signing up for the same mess all over again.
Establishing a good rapport with pets is crucial for any pet sitter. A study by animal behaviorists shows that understanding pet behavior can significantly reduce the likelihood of destructive actions. For instance, dogs often chew out of boredom or anxiety.
Engaging them with toys or exercise can alleviate this stress.

Daisy is still adorable, but OP’s resentment is very real, especially after he brushed off her sentimental loss.
