Friends Last-Minute Gluten-Free Diet Demand Ruins Cooking Session - AITA?
AITA for not accommodating friend's last-minute gluten-free dietary needs during a cooking session, leading to a rift in our friendship?
A 28-year-old guy planned a full cooking hangout with his friend Sam, and it was supposed to be one of those “we’re finally doing something together” nights. He even picked the menu and bought the ingredients ahead of time, because he was actually excited.
Then, right when they’re starting to prep, Sam drops the gluten-free bombshell. Nobody’s saying Sam is wrong to avoid gluten, the problem is the timing, and the fact that the plan was built around food that is not gluten-free. OP hesitates, sticks with the original menu anyway, and Sam storms off, calling him inconsiderate.
Now OP is stuck wondering if he should have reshuffled everything last minute, or if Sam should have mentioned it before the groceries were already paid for.
Original Post
So I'm (28M) and my friend Sam (27M) wanted us to have a cooking session together. I was excited since we both love cooking, and it's been a while since we hung out like that.
I planned out the menu and bought all the ingredients. The day finally arrives, and as we start prepping, Sam drops a bombshell - he's gone gluten-free.
I was taken aback since this wasn't mentioned before. I had already bought everything and planned a menu that wasn't gluten-free.
I hesitated but decided to stick to the original plan since I had put in effort and money into this. Sam got upset, saying I was being inconsiderate and should accommodate his dietary needs.
Things got awkward, and he left in a huff. I feel bad, but I also think he should have told me beforehand.
So AITA?

This feels like the AITA where a friend debated canceling a dinner party after a hurtful comment.

OP shows up with ingredients for a non-gluten-free menu, and that’s when Sam’s surprise “I’m gluten-free now” announcement hits like a bad plot twist.
The awkward pause starts immediately after the menu decision, because OP already spent money and time prepping, while Sam expects a full pivot on the spot.
When OP refuses to change course mid-cooking session, Sam takes it personally and leaves in a huff, turning a fun hangout into a fight about respect.
With Sam gone and the kitchen still set up for the original plan, OP is left replaying the whole night and asking if he was really the inconsiderate one.

Sam might be able to skip gluten, but he definitely can’t skip the part where he waited until the last second to say it.
