Disney World’s next Piston Peak clue is a permit for the first set pieces at Magic Kingdom

Disney filed an Oct. 15 permit for set-element installation at Magic Kingdom’s Cars-themed Piston Peak area.

Magic Kingdom’s former waterfront is moving into a new phase. Disney has filed a permit dated October 15 for set-element installation at Piston Peak National Park, the Cars-inspired area replacing the Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and the Liberty Square Riverboat.

What changed at Magic Kingdom

The new filing points to work that goes beyond clearing the site. While the permit does not say which pieces are being installed, it suggests the project is advancing past the demolition, utility work, and reshaping of the river and island that occupied much of the past year.

That matters for Magic Kingdom visitors because this is the area where a long familiar Frontierland and Liberty Square backdrop once sat. The three waterfront experiences closed permanently on July 7, 2025. The river had been part of the park since opening day in 1971, and Tom Sawyer Island followed in 1973.

Guests visiting this fall can still expect construction walls around the old waterfront, and Disney has not given an opening timeline for the new land or either of its rides. Even so, the permit raises the possibility that the first clearly themed pieces of Piston Peak could start appearing on site.

What Disney has already revealed about Piston Peak

Disney has said the new area will bring the world of Cars into a setting inspired by national parks. A model shown at D23 this year outlined a land with snow-capped peaks, tall trees, waterfalls, rivers, and geysers. Disney also said buildings such as a visitor lodge and Ranger HQ will use rustic “Parkitecture,” with trees and rough terrain helping shield the area from the rest of Frontierland and Liberty Square.

The headline attraction is Cars Ridge Run Rally, an off-road race through snowy summits, steep descents, and geyser fields in ride vehicles designed to react to the terrain. An original character, Ranger J. Autobahn Woodlore, is part of that story.

The second ride is Miss Fritter’s Daredevil Spin-Along, built around the demolition derby champion from Cars 3. Disney has said the attraction will feature a giant Audio-Animatronics figure about the size of a school bus.

Piston Peak is only one piece of a much larger remake. Disney has described the combined Piston Peak and Villains Land build-out as the biggest expansion in Magic Kingdom history, with Villains Land planned beyond Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and set to add two major attractions along with dining and shopping.
