Frozen 3 Update: Disney Says Five Songs Are in Progress as a New Threat Looms Over Elsa

Disney says Frozen 3 is due in a year, about five songs along, and introducing a new villain who may be more powerful than Elsa.

Disney has offered its clearest progress report yet on Frozen 3, and the most intriguing detail may be what is happening behind the music. The next trip to Arendelle is now described as a year away, with songwriters already deep into the sequel and a new villain being positioned as a serious test for Elsa.

A production update with a big tease for Frozen fans

Jared Bush, the head of Disney Animation, said Frozen 3 is due in one year and shared that Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Bobby Lopez are currently working on one of the film's most emotional songs. He said the team is about five songs into the movie, giving fans a more concrete sense of how far along the sequel has moved.

Bush also suggested the third film is aiming for more than a routine return for Anna, Elsa, and Olaf. He described the story as very special and said it should surprise audiences. The biggest character tease involved the new antagonist. According to Bush, Frozen 3 will introduce a new villain who may be more powerful than Elsa.

Disney is still keeping one major piece of that reveal under wraps. The performer voicing the villain has not been announced, although Bush said the character has already been recorded multiple times. Attendees at D23 in August had already heard the villain's voice, but Disney has yet to identify the actor behind it.

What is already known about the story, and where Frozen 3 sits for Disney

Some plot points had already emerged at D23. Anna and Kristoff are set to move toward their wedding and make honeymoon plans. Olaf is also getting a new love interest, a snow girlfriend named Samantha. At the same time, Arendelle will not be entirely peaceful, with a black-clad witch set to complicate the sisters' path to a happy ending.

The update matters because Frozen 3 is the next major animated sequel still ahead from Disney's 2023 batch of follow-ups. Toy Story 5 returned to theaters this summer and took in $1.15 billion worldwide. Before that, Zootopia 2 earned more than $1.87 billion last November and became the second highest-grossing animated film of all time.

For Disney fans tracking the studio's biggest animation franchises, the change is simple: Frozen 3 now has a firmer public production status, a clearer sense of its music progress, and a stronger hint at the scale of its new threat. The return to Arendelle is set for around this time next year.
