AITA for excluding family from Christmas over ignored allergies?
OP's family ignores severe nut allergies, leading to a heartbreaking Christmas decision. Reddit weighs in: AITA for prioritizing my health over family traditions?
In a world where family gatherings often revolve around food, the story of one Reddit user has sparked a heated discussion about the importance of health and safety versus tradition. The original poster, a 28-year-old woman, has been living with severe nut allergies that pose serious health risks.
Despite her family's knowledge of her condition, she has faced repeated instances where her allergies were not respected, particularly during their annual Christmas dinner. After years of reminders and a recent mild allergic reaction due to negligence, she decided enough was enough.
This year, she made it clear that she would only attend Christmas dinner if her family took her allergies seriously. Despite her efforts to help plan a safe menu, she was met with disappointment when she discovered that many dishes still contained nuts.
Feeling betrayed, she chose to celebrate Christmas alone, leading to accusations from her family of ruining the holiday spirit. The post has ignited a wave of commentary on the balance between family traditions and individual health needs.
As Redditors weigh in, the thread raises critical questions about respect, boundaries, and the responsibilities families hold toward one another, especially when it comes to serious health concerns. What do you think?
Is it fair for the OP to prioritize her health over family traditions, or should there be more effort to accommodate her needs? Join the discussion!

I (28F) have severe nut allergies that have been a lifelong challenge. It's not just a mild inconvenience; it's a matter of life and death.
My family, especially my parents and siblings, are well aware of my condition. Every Christmas, we have a big family dinner where everyone contributes a dish.
For years, I've been reminding my family about my nut allergies. They accommodated at first, but slowly, I noticed some dishes weren't labeled correctly for allergens or my family members weren't as cautious in the kitchen.
Last year, I had a mild reaction because some dessert had traces of nuts. This scared me, and I expressed my concerns to my family clearly.
This year, I made it explicitly clear that I wouldn't attend Christmas dinner unless my family took my allergies seriously. I offered to help plan the menu and provided alternatives and recipes that were safe for me.
However, when the day arrived, I found out that nuts were in almost every dish, and some were even hidden. Feeling betrayed and disregarded, I made the difficult decision to leave and celebrate Christmas alone.
My family was shocked and tried to guilt-trip me, saying I ruined the tradition and the family gathering. They accused me of being dramatic and selfish for putting my health above family togetherness.
But to me, it's about respecting boundaries and my well-being. So, Reddit, I'm torn.
Am I the jerk in this situation?
