Marvel's Star Wars Crossover Just Solved Its Strangest Question Before Issue 1 Arrives

New Hope Assembles artwork reveals Marvel's heroes know Star Wars as a movie ahead of the six-issue crossover in January 2027.

The latest look at Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles clears up the question hanging over this unusual mashup since it was announced. The preview suggests Marvel's heroes are not meeting Star Wars characters as total strangers. They already seem to know Star Wars as a movie, which gives the 2027 comic event a distinctly self-aware twist.

The new preview changes how this crossover looks

Lucasfilm and Marvel have now released the first in-comic artwork for Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles, the six-issue crossover written by Kevin Smith and illustrated by David Marquez. The series launches in January 2027, and the new pages make one part of the setup much clearer for readers: Star Wars appears to already exist as a film inside Marvel's world.

In one panel, Captain America asks Ben Grimm, also known as the Thing, whether the stormtroopers have a name in the Star Wars movie, even referring to them as "canned hams." The preview indicates that most of the other heroes already understand the reference, while Captain America is the one trying to catch up. The artwork also suggests the Avengers are being dropped into the opening scene of Episode IV.

That reveal matters because this is not just a straightforward character swap. Hope Assembles is set in Marvel's Earth-616 universe and brings Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, Han Solo, Chewbacca and Obi-Wan Kenobi into contact with Marvel figures including Spider-Man and the Avengers. Darth Vader and Doctor Doom are also set to join forces.

The newly released material includes variant covers as well. One shows Luke teaming up with Spider-Man, while another imagines Vader wearing the Infinity Gauntlet. Interior art also features Captain America, Iron Man, Thor and other Marvel heroes battling stormtroopers.

A larger Star Wars 50th anniversary rollout is taking shape

Hope Assembles is part of Lucasfilm's plans for 2027, which marks 50 years since A New Hope opened in theaters in 1977. Marvel first published a Star Wars comic in that same year, making this crossover a reunion of sorts half a century later.

Other anniversary projects already announced include Star Wars: Gobaith Newydd, a Welsh-language version of the original film that will debut on S4C and its streaming platforms on Christmas Day 2026. Star Wars: The Experience, A Journey Through the Galaxy is set to open at Philadelphia's Franklin Institute in February 2027.

The original A New Hope is also scheduled to return to theaters for a limited engagement on February 19. Another comic, Star Wars: A New Hope, Triple Take, will retell the 1977 story through the perspectives of Luke, Leia and Han.

For Star Wars and Marvel fans, the immediate update is simple: the crossover's premise is no longer just about heroes meeting across franchises. It now looks like a story where Marvel characters know exactly what Star Wars is, right before they end up inside it.
