Samuel L. Jackson Says Nick Fury Skips Avengers: Doomsday but Returns for Secret Wars

Samuel L. Jackson says Nick Fury is not in Avengers: Doomsday and is set to return in Avengers: Secret Wars.

Samuel L. Jackson has offered a small but meaningful update on Marvel’s next Avengers era: Nick Fury is set to come back for Avengers: Secret Wars. He also said Fury will not appear in Avengers: Doomsday, and that he has not been told anything about the later film’s plot.

Jackson shared the update during a red carpet interview ahead of the premiere of The Beast, his newest film. Asked about Fury’s absence from Marvel movies lately, he said the character’s next appearance is planned for the Avengers film that comes after Doomsday.

Based on Marvel Studios’ current release slate, that points to Avengers: Secret Wars. Jackson did not offer any story clues beyond that. He said Marvel has only told him that he will not be in Doomsday and that he will be in the next movie, leaving him without any meaningful details about what Fury will actually do when he returns.

That makes this reveal notable for Marvel fans in a very specific way. It does not unlock the shape of Secret Wars, but it does place Fury somewhere in the studio’s endgame for the Multiverse Saga.

What Jackson’s update means for the two Avengers movies ahead

The clearest takeaway is that Fury is out of Avengers: Doomsday and in line for Avengers: Secret Wars. Jackson’s comments draw a line between the two films at a moment when Marvel is still keeping a lot of its future plans under wraps.

Doomsday is scheduled to reach theaters on December 18, 2026. Secret Wars, meanwhile, remains much harder to read from the outside. Marvel has been tightly controlling information about its cast, and Jackson’s remarks fit that pattern. Even with one legacy character now verbally attached to the film, the larger picture is still mostly hidden.

A few cast details have surfaced. Noah Jupe was added in September in a role that has not been revealed. Anthony Mackie has also been confirmed for the movie, although he has said he will not be able to start filming until his Broadway run in Macbeth ends in July 2027. Those pieces help sketch the edges of the project, but not the story itself.

Why Secret Wars still feels like Marvel’s biggest question mark

Secret Wars has also faced production uncertainty. Multiple insiders have said filming has been pushed to early 2027, most likely January, although no reason for that delay has been given. That has added to anxiety around Marvel’s current saga, especially because some fans see Doomsday as a film that needs to deliver in a major way to keep enthusiasm high.

The movie is positioned as a huge endpoint. It is set to be the sixth major crossover event in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the final chapter in the Multiverse Saga. In practical terms, that means it is expected to close out the era of alternate versions of characters that have spread across Marvel films and television through the last three phases of the MCU.

It will also mark the end of the Russo brothers’ current Marvel run. The pair said in June 2026 that they do not plan to direct a third movie that would launch a new Avengers trilogy.

There are still open questions about what Secret Wars will borrow from the comics. One element that has been indicated, but not confirmed, is Battleworld, the patchwork planet made from different versions of Earth and tied to Doctor Doom in the source storyline. For now, Jackson’s comment does not answer any of that. What it does do is put Nick Fury on the board for Marvel’s multiverse finale, even if the man playing him says he knows almost nothing else.
