New Monstropolis Aerials Reveal Disney World’s Biggest Clue Yet About the Monsters, Inc. Coaster
Fresh aerial footage shows Monstropolis taking shape at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, with the Monsters, Inc. coaster still part of a phased 2027 rollout.
A fresh look from above is offering Disney fans a clearer sense of how Monstropolis is taking shape at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The new footage points to real construction progress on the Monsters, Inc. expansion, while also underscoring one important detail for 2027 visitors: the headline coaster is not expected to open with the land’s first wave.
New aerial footage shared on X shows visible progress on the Monstropolis project that is replacing the former Grand Avenue area at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The expansion is set to recreate the city from Pixar’s Monsters, Inc. films as a larger district rather than a single attraction, with multiple locations inspired by the franchise.

The post from aerial photographer Bioreconstruct described the video as a look at construction of the Monsters, Inc. suspended door roller coaster and Monstropolis, along with track staged near EPCOT. A second post shared a closer aerial photo of the coaster building, identifying it as the Monsters, Inc. factory at Monstropolis.
The project’s centerpiece is the roller coaster based on the door vault chase from the original film, when Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan race through the warehouse of doors. Disney is expected to make this its first suspended roller coaster, with ride vehicles hanging below the track instead of riding on top of it. The large show building for that attraction has been advancing and is expected to become one of the park’s major draws once finished.

What opens first in 2027
The latest construction update also comes with a caveat for guests planning an early visit. Disney has already outlined a phased opening for Monstropolis, with several experiences arriving in 2027 while work on the coaster continues.
Among the earlier offerings is the Glob Theater, which will house a show called Welcome to Monstropolis. Concept art for that venue shows a monster-themed exterior, a theater-style lobby, and in-world details including parody movie posters and other decor meant to make the building feel like part of the city.
Dining is also in the plans. Disney has confirmed that Harryhausen’s, the sushi restaurant from the original movie, will be part of the land. Throughout the area, guests can also expect laugh canisters and other set pieces that reflect the story’s later shift from scream power to laughter.
Taken together, the new aerials move Monstropolis beyond concept art and into a more tangible phase. For fans watching Hollywood Studios’ next big build, the newest question is not whether the land is coming into focus. It is how much of that Monsters, Inc. world guests will get to explore when the first phase opens in 2027.
