Reddit User Asks Which Movie Is The Most Disturbing, and a List of the Most Horrifying Films Ever Emerged

How is it that we can be both terrified and thrilled at the same time?

Statistics show that one in two Americans enjoy horror films, as do around 36% of people worldwide. But what exactly is it about the genre that we like so much? According to Dr. William Doherty, family therapist, "Horror films tap into our primal fears and allow us to confront them in a safe environment." After all, horror films are created to scare us and often contain disturbing scenes of violence and gore. These types of movies generally cover topics and situations that we would never hope to encounter in real life. Yet, for some reason, we sit glued to our seats, watching in awe as the terror unfolds before us. So, how is it that we can be both terrified and thrilled at the same time? Research shows that many people enjoy horror films because they relish the stimulation. The adrenaline rush we experience while watching a scary movie can physically and mentally provoke us. This sort of stimulation can affect us in either a positive or negative way—positively in the form of joy and excitement, or negatively in the form of fear and anxiety. Some people enjoy watching horror purely because they appreciate being shocked. It's human nature to be intrigued by things that are strange or unknown. Recently, Reddit user u/wontbetamed posted in the r/AskReddit subreddit asking, "What is the most disturbing movie you've watched?" As always, the Reddit community had plenty to say on the topic. What followed was a collective list of all the most horrifying films ever. Keep scrolling to see what they came up with.

So, there you have it—a collective list of all the most horrifying films ever (according to Reddit users). Do you agree with the Reddit community's choices?

Personally, I have to say that The Accused left me feeling sick. The infamous rape scene and Jodie Foster's blood-curdling screams gave me nightmares for weeks!

Isn't it crazy how films that we know are not real can still affect us on such a deep level? Some can even stay with us for life.

Sometimes, a film may even be a little too much for some individuals to bear, with many people admitting they have had to leave the cinema mid-movie on occasion. So crazy!

What are some films you have found particularly disturbing? We would love to hear your thoughts in the comment section below.
