A Small Permit May Have Exposed Monstropolis’ Family Fix at Disney’s Hollywood Studios

A new Disney permit points to a playground in Monstropolis at Hollywood Studios, possibly arriving with the land in 2027.

One new permit may have revealed a surprisingly important piece of Disney’s planned Monstropolis expansion. The filing does not spell out playground in plain language, but the contractor attached to it strongly suggests a kid focused play area is in the works at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

The update is a newly filed Walt Disney Imagineering permit for general construction at 361 Cypress Drive. That address is the former Stage 1 Company Store, beside the building that housed MuppetVision 3D and is being rethemed into the Glob Theatre.

What makes the filing stand out is the listed contractor, Landscape Structures, Inc. The company is known for commercial playgrounds, not ride systems, restaurant buildouts, or retail interiors. Based on that contractor choice, the permit points to a dedicated play structure for the Monstropolis project rather than a standard shop or another indoor build.

That reading also lines up with earlier concept art that showed colorful shade canopies over an outdoor interactive area. The permit suggests Disney may be moving beyond a loose activity zone and toward an actual playground.

If that is where the project is headed, it would mark a notable swap in the footprint. The site previously held a merchandise location, and the current plans appear to favor a family space instead. For guests, especially those visiting with younger children, that could be one of the more practical additions tied to the land expected in 2027.

Why this could matter more than it sounds

A play area would make particular sense in Monstropolis because the land’s main new attraction is described as Disney’s first suspended door vault coaster. A coaster brings height requirements, which can leave younger children waiting while other family members ride. A nearby playground would give those guests something to do besides standing in the walkway.

The location also appears well chosen. Placing a play space next to the Glob Theatre could help families who arrive before a showtime or need a break after a performance. It could also give adults an easier option if a child is not ready to sit through a theater show.

Disney has already used Landscape Structures on temporary EPCOT festival play zones and on the new play area under construction in Pueblo Esperanza at Disney’s Animal Kingdom in Tropical Americas. If Monstropolis gets the same treatment, it would mean two major new lands are being built with dedicated play spaces in mind.

That would stand out against several recent Disney expansions. The report points to Pandora, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, and Toy Story Land as examples of lands built around headline rides, shopping, and dining, without a true playground included at opening. This permit suggests Disney may be rethinking that formula for families with smaller kids.
