Pearl Jam gave Ohana Festival fans an unexpected extra on Friday night when the band appeared during Eddie Vedder's headlining set. The bigger surprise was who sat behind the kit: Abe Laboriel Jr., the longtime Paul McCartney collaborator, instantly turning a guest spot into a new round of questions about Pearl Jam's future.

The appearance came during Vedder's Dana Point, California, set, which was billed as "Eddie Vedder and Friends." Fans in the beachside crowd had not been given any advance sign that Pearl Jam would be joining him, and the band made the reveal count.

With Laboriel on drums, Pearl Jam opened with "Corduroy." The set then moved through songs including "Hail Hail," "Scared of Fear," and "Wishlist." Laboriel is not only a drummer. He also contributes background vocals, and his live experience spans some of the world's biggest stages, including Super Bowl halftime shows and concerts held in front of Queen Elizabeth.

What the appearance does and does not answer

The timing matters because Pearl Jam's sixth drummer position has been open since Matt Cameron's amicable exit in July 2025. The band has already said it picked a new member, but it has not publicly identified that person.

That means Laboriel's role is still unconfirmed. Pearl Jam has not made an official statement saying whether he has joined the group. His appearance at Ohana could point in that direction, but it does not settle the question on its own.

Laboriel also has a direct link to Vedder beyond Friday's set. He appeared on Vedder's 2022 solo album, "Earthling." Interest around him had already been building in May, when fans noticed he was absent from McCartney's performance during the 51st season finale of "Saturday Night Live," with Chad Smith filling in instead.

What remains unknown is whether Laboriel has left McCartney, whether he could work with both acts, or whether Friday was simply a one-off festival surprise. For now, the clearest takeaway is that Pearl Jam put one mystery onstage without fully solving it: fans have now seen Laboriel play with the band, but they still do not know if he is the new member Pearl Jam has been keeping secret.
