Photographer Hunts Down People He Photographed Nearly 40 Years Ago to Recreate Their Images
Photographer Chris Porsz recreates photographs taken nearly four decades ago, and it's mesmerizing.
You've probably heard of Chris Porsz, a well-known British photographer. Chris is renowned for his "Reunions" project, which chronicles people's lives in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire.
One might assume that Porsz focuses on ordinary street-style photographs, yet he has been working on his project for almost 40 years. His endeavor is unique because he photographs the same people in the same locations years after the original photograph was taken.
Chris has been working on part two of his "Reunions" project for the past fifteen months, with the first images dating back to the 1970s. "For many, seeing an image of their younger selves brought back wonderful memories of a day they had forgotten," Chris said in his photography book "Reunions 2."
Many people were ecstatic to have a photograph of themselves at a pivotal period in their lives that would otherwise go undocumented. I am deeply grateful to those once-random individuals who generously allowed me to share their fascinating lives with you, making Reunions 2 possible.
Chris explains how he came up with the idea for his project "Reunions": "I picked up my first camera, a Kodak Instamatic, in 1972 to record a crazy 6,000-mile, three-week hitchhiking trip across Europe and North Africa with my girlfriend, now wife, Lesley. The images were terrible, so I got a better camera to take pictures of my family, and I quickly caught the photography bug."
