Mother-In-Law Throws A Tantrum During Christmas Dinner After Finding Out She Was Given A Fake Emergency House Key
"I've never heard a woman over 60 throw a tantrum like that."
If you've landed yourself a terror of a mother-in-law, then you should prepare for the countless ways she will annoyingly meddle in your life. What's worse is if your partner sides with her during a conflict.
A Redditor posted her horrible mother-in-law story in the subreddit 'Am I An Asshole?' after getting into a confrontation with her in front of other family members. It wasn't exactly out of the blue, but the sight of an adult woman throwing a tantrum was new for her.
She began by describing her mother-in-law as snoopy and annoying, which was excused by others. The recent problem arose when the mother-in-law discovered that the original poster (OP) and her husband had bought a house after being married for a year.
The mother-in-law immediately pushed for an emergency key, but since she had one for their last apartment, OP was apprehensive after the mother-in-law had used it in non-emergency situations. She even walked in on them being intimate twice, which her husband didn't think much of.
To placate her, OP gave her a fake key instead, and she went on her merry way. However, at Christmas dinner, the mother-in-law called OP out after discovering that she had been given a fake key, and things took a turn for the worse.

This starts out in a surprisingly relatable way for lots of families, I'm sure.

Wow, he's a real winner. I wonder where he got those personality pointers from?

The mother-in-law shamed OP for deceiving her with a fake key until OP asked how she found out that the key was fake. It turns out the mother-in-law used it when both of them weren't home.
OP then called her out for breaking her promise after saying that she wouldn't use it during non-emergency situations. This triggered the mother-in-law's tantrum while everyone was in the room.
OP's husband went off on her in the car and said that he would have stopped her plan had he known she was going to do it. He demanded an apology from OP for what she did to her mother-in-law and for ruining Christmas for them.
The family sounds like enablers for the mother-in-law to easily throw a tantrum after being called out.

If she falls off, she better know how to swim.

Redditors agree that the mother-in-law isn't the only a**hole in the situation.

OP pulled an uno reverse card on her.

If the mother-in-law thought she was going to one-up OP again, then she was very wrong.
redheadjd
A husband problem on top of a mother-in-law problem; OP has a lot to deal with.
dldoom
His indifference toward that incident is concerning.

Here's another red flag for the husband.

If OP turns a blind eye to this behavior, it might get worse for her as time goes by.
CakeEatingRabbit
There were many opportunities for the mother-in-law to bring it up to OP since she found out, but instead, she waited until Christmas dinner.

Exposing the mother-in-law wasn't even intentional, yet she got served through her own fault.

This way, the husband can get what he wants, and OP can have the privacy she deserves.
ApicalFuraha
Counseling would only work if OP's husband acknowledges the wrong in his priorities.
Neechiesb4Cheezees
OP needs all the support she can get, even if it's anonymous, after being thrown to the wolves for defending herself.
Advanced-Extent-420
OP has a chance to exit the marriage before there are more complications to consider.
TheRipley78
OP stated in the post that her in-laws always excused her mother-in-law's behavior.

It seems they would never hold the mother-in-law accountable for her wrongdoings.

Like there isn't anything better to do than walk in on your child having sex, even though you could have avoided it.

His boundaries are almost non-existent when it comes to his mom, and he needs to understand the consequences that will arise.

Then the mother-in-law would have a blast skipping in and out of OP's house just to annoy her.

The apple doesn't fall far from the very manipulative tree.

This Redditor might have found a way to give OP some real peace.

Redditors saw how OP needed reassurance that what she did and how she stood up for herself wasn't wrong. She wasn't the one being the a**hole, and she didn't stir the pot for drama.
There's a consensus, however, that if her husband does not reconsider his priorities, then she should reconsider their relationship. Otherwise, she might get hurt in the long run.
