User Sorts Reddit Comments By "Controversial" and Is Surprised By What He Discovered
Don't make the same mistake he did.
Social media is a double-edged sword. When used correctly, it can bring numerous benefits.
Sadly, it has caused more harm than good for many people. An article posted on Forbes revealed that Reddit, Facebook, and Twitter are platforms detrimental to people's mental health during the pandemic.
Moreover, 57.6% of respondents who primarily use Reddit for COVID-19 news admitted that their mental health worsened. Even without examining the statistics, the toxicity of users on these platforms is evident.
This is what a user named Redcrux observed while browsing Reddit. Recently, he opened his social media app and encountered nothing but comments from racists and edgelords—essentially, the worst kind of people on the internet.
He was shocked to discover that there were numerous individuals like this, even in the subreddits he frequently visited. It seemed as though he had lost faith in humanity.
Until he discovered something crucial: the main reason he was only seeing the worst comments.
Apparently, he had sorted one thread by "Controversial," mistakenly believing that the setting applied only to that thread. Little did he know, the setting began applying to all the threads he visited.
He finally realized the problem and shared his experience on Reddit. Let's see how his fellow redditors reacted.
The user posted his experience in the Today I F*cked Up (TIFU) subreddit.

Political discussions are indeed the most controversial because they tend to become heated. Others often avoid them because they are fighting over the same old issues endlessly.

Moral lesson of the story: Don't sort by controversial.
There are plenty of comments you'd rather not read. When you're exposed to negativity, your mind starts to think negatively as well.
Reading such comments can also shift your perception or even your behavior. Those toxic comments are among the reasons why people's mental health is affected.
Experts say that negative comments can influence how your day unfolds. If this becomes a habit, you might find yourself feeling depressed.
If you want to lessen the toxicity and hatred you encounter while browsing Reddit, never use this option. Otherwise, you'll find yourself losing faith in humanity or even worsening your mental health.
